My mom had knee replacement surgery five days ago and is now home and managing her own medication. Her prescription directs her to take 2 percocet every 4-6 hours. She finds that taking two at a time makes her sick to her stomach. But she can't quite make it a full four hours if she takes just one. Is it safe for her to take one pill every 2-3 hours instead of the 2 pills every four hours?

That should be fine, unless her doctor says otherwise, it really amounts to almost the same dosing, just staggering them. The area of concern would be if she was taking more than prescribed during any given time period.
The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation.
Another idea would be to try making sure she doesn't take it on an empty stomach, that can sometimes help prevent the nausea.
