Omeprazole Withdrawal Symptoms

Hi. I have been on omeprazole and 600 mg of ibuprofen daily for at least 8 months. I have now had a new knee replacement 3 months ago and I have stopped taking both of these drugs, but now have dreadful indigestion and heartburn. I refuse to take omeprazole ever again. I also take a probiotic. Would it be a good idea to take a Zantac and see if that helps? I also have haemochromatosis.

If you were taking the Omeprazole for 8 months, then abruptly stopped taking it, it is highly likely that part of your problem is due to a rebound effect. This may be causing you to overproduce stomach acid now.

What's most likely happened is that your body became reliant on the drug to suppress the amount of acid produce by the stomach and now, it suddenly has to readjust to no longer having it and that will take some time.

That's really why these medications aren't recommended for use longer than 3 to 4 months.

You may get some relief from the Zantac, but if you just continue using stuff that suppresses or neutralizes the stomach acid, you'll likely experience the same types of issues, when you try to stop taking it that you did with the Omeprazole.

After being on similar medications for a long period of time due to having developed gastritis, I had to radically alter my diet to keep the stomach acid down, while my body readjusted to my no longer taking the medications and it took about 2 months. Then, I was finally able to gradually go back to my normal diet.
