Omeprazole Not Working

Hi ,I have Gerd, gastritis, a hiatus hernia and heartburn. I have been taking Omeprazole 40 mg for over a month and I do not feel any better. Is that normal? How long before this medication starts taking effect? Please help.

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that is used to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach, to treat or prevent conditions, such as heartburn, GERD, ulcers and gastritis.

It will not, however, do anything for a hernia.


As to how long before it helps, there is actually no way to say whether or not any medication will be effective for any certain person.

But, this medication usually does need to be taken for 8 to 16 weeks, depending on the severity of your condition, to actually help these conditions to heal.

If you are still experiencing some symptoms, such as stomach pain and heartburn, you may be able to use another antacid with this, like Tums, which will give some relief in minutes.

Have you asked your doctor about also using something like this?
