Omeprazole Cap 20mg Side Effects

My husband has been on the above capsule for a week. When he eats acid fruit he vomits 3 to 4 hours later. feels okay after that. Is it the tablet and should he be avoiding tomatoes and oranges?

According to a number of sources, there are "no known" interactions with omeprazole and food or beverages. However, nicotine, caffeine and alcohol can stimulate stomach acid or delay ulcer healing.

Omeprazole belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPI). The proton pump is the site within the stomach cell where hydrochloric acid is actually made and pumped out into the stomach. The PPIs block the formation of acid in the stomach from 80% to over 90% if enough of the drug is taken.

Because of this, I'm thinking that acid fruit would have some sort of interaction, despite the above statement. This is just my opinion, but while he's on this medication it may just be wise to stick to more alkaline based fruits, like melons, berries, bananas, dates, mangoes, etc. I would also recommend only eating fruit by itself (for a meal or snack) and not with other types of food that impair the digestion of fruit. Lastly, I think it would be beneficial to look up "proper fruit combining", so you and your husband know which fruits go well with each other, as to avoid any stomach discomfort or possible vomitting.

I am going to assume your hubby is in the same boat as I am and taking this medication for GERD and the answer to your question is Yes he should avoid citrus foods at almost any cost or only consume small amounts of it

Acid Reflux is a Bad Number. Check your Gastro; he will hand you a phamplet: No faty fun foods...hambergers, fries; no tomatoes or acid producing fluit, NO Citrus
(they took my OJ away damit) little alchol, etc, Get ready GO - CHANGE YOUR DIET. I did and it helps.
I take massive Omepraole for two weeks now. Don't know yet for how long, but get a good Gastro and stick with him. This column is no substitute for a good specialist. Nodding off now and then....Richard
