Ok To Take Oxycodone Only When Needed? (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have chronic back and neck pain, I was on a high dose of Morphine for a long time and came off of it a year ago. The pain is so bad that I had to start taking Vicodin off and on and it helped but it made me sick to my stomach because of the Tylenol. I was on every nsaids made for many years due to failed back surgery etc. I have a nice doctor who seems very understanding about joint pain and will give me what ever necessary. I am taking Oxycodone 5 mg. because it has no Tylenol and it doesn't make me sick. I am afraid of my body getting used to the drug and having withdrawals when stopping. I may take it once or twice a week and then not for days. Is this safe or can I become dependent with out even knowing it. I figure if I let it get out of my system and only take it when it's severe, I will not have a problem. Do you think it is safe when taken this way?? It takes the edge off the pain but I don't want to build up a tolerance and go that route again.

YEs, it is safe to take it that way, nothing wrong with doing that, or dangerous about it, at all. I was on pain management a few years ago, myself and became dependent on them, even though I only took them as prescribed, so I know where you're coming from. The withdrawals are miserable, even when you don't abuse them.
Therefore, when I ended up in the hospital late last year, with a severe case of gastritis and the doctor gave me 5mg of Oxycodone, I did the same as you. I refused to take it, unless I absolutely needed it.
There are two ways that pain medications can be used. The first is, as you are doing, only when it is really needed. The only downside to this type of usage is that the pain is often so bad, that the medication can no longer handle all of it, so even after taking it, you still have some pain and are suffering.
The other way is to take it, regularly, ever 6 to 8 or however it has been prescribed. The advantage to this is that is helps keep your pain from getting too severe, so the medication can work better. It's basically a preventative measure. This does help more than just taking it, as needed, though.
By now, you have dealt with this long enough to know your body and be able to tell when you are hitting a period when your pain is going to get bad. So, your best bet is to take the medication, as soon as you feel this coming on, so you can get it under control. Doing this, you can avoid taking it all the time and becoming dependent, but still not end up completely miserable.

Jst to let you know that oxycodone stays in your system anywhere from 3 to 6 days, So, even though you take breaks in between you may still end up with some withdrawl. Yorur body may also build up a tolenece to that doseage even if you do take breaks in between doses. Also, the medication does not work as well if you wait until you have pain. When you reach the point of pain it is acctually already to late which makes the pain a lot harder to gert rid of. You may want to try taking it everyday like the previous post recomends. There is also something called the pain cycle. You should try to take the medication 3 to 5 days in a row to break the pain cycle. If you can break the cycle the you may feel better then you ever have before.
