Occasional Moderately High Blood Pressure

I only have moderately high blood pressure sometimes. My question is should I take the metoprolol er even when my blood pressure is normal? I have asked this question twice to my provider, and have never felt answered.

Metoprolol is a beta blocker, that is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure.

And yes, you should continue to take the medication, exactly as prescribed, even if you get a normal reading. The only time you should change this, is when your doctor has advised you to do so.

There are 2 reasons for this:

1) You have no way of knowing when your blood pressure is going to go up, you can't possibly monitor it all the time, so there is no way to only use a medication for this on an as needed basis.

2) These medications take awhile to reach their full effectiveness in your body. So, if you aren't taking them all the time, they are not going to be able to control your blood pressure as they should.

When your doctor doesn't listen to you and give you the answers you need, it's time to look for another doctor. I just saw this on the Dr. Oz TV show. Write down your three questions before your appointment and don't leave the office until you get specific answers to your questions. A good doctor doesn't mind a 2nd opinion.
