Nitrophurantoin Adverse Side Effects

After just one 50mg capsule I developed a massive headache, nausea, diarrohea with blood, nose bleed and just wanted to sleep. After persevering and another 6 capsules I thought I was going to be hospitalized, in all my life I have never been so ill and could no longer function. I spoke to my Dr and she saw me immediately and was wanting me to have a CAT scan, I felt so ill I declined as I was certain it was the drug. I was then prescribed Trimethoprim, these also had side effects but manageable and of course it took several days getting over being poisoned. I have never taken antibiotics before so had no idea if I was allergic to any, it is like russian roulette. The side effects of this drug are serious and at no point was I informed to be cautious in case they occurred, why? I feel loads better now but everyone be aware as it could be you. The leaflet of side effects in no way can let you know how awful it is, my life was on hold I could do nothing. The laugh is you must take them with food, try eating with them it is next to impossible it took me half an hour to eat a slice of toast. hope this helps someone as they may think they are being neurotic, well you aren't.

Wow! I am so sorry! That's horrible and definitely not normal! The FDA lists typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea.

Thus, your symptoms were extreme.

How are you doing, now? Has there been any change?

Are you on any other medications?

Thanks Verwon. I am completely better now, I had to assume this was a radical reaction as at no point was I warned of any extremes. It took about a week to eat normally again but the extreme headache, nausea, diarrhoea and inability to do anything but lie down went within 12 hours of stopping the drug. Fortunately my GP took it seriously and did not make me feel that I was being overdramatic and neurotic, the CAT scan worried me as it made me think what is the potential of this drug, although she maybe thought I had an additional problem as well. As a migraine sufferer I felt confident that I was not having a 'bleed' as it had such similarities. The Trimethoprim were ok and got rid of my infection without extreme side effects although there were some. Muscle ache and cramps, feeling strangely hot upon any exertion and very slight nausea with reduced appetite but these did not bother me as I could function, walk around the house do light household tasks etc. I truly hope my comments help someone else as with any drug there will be the odd person who reacts adversely.
