Nitrofurantoin For Tooth Infection

I am currently experiencing a toothache and have also suffered from bladder infections following a vaginal hysterectomy and bladder sling procedure with pelvic mesh for prolapse, which seems to be causing recurrent infections. Could this medication also be effective for treating my toothache? Additionally, what other conditions can it be used for?

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic that's usually used to treat UTIs and E. Coli. [1]

And the first relevant factor here is that you shouldn't be trying to self-diagnose and self-treat, just because you have some antibiotic left at home. You may not have enough to properly treat any given infection, which creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. That can also be a problem if you take it for something that turns out not to be an actual infection.

And if your toothache is due to a dental infection, this may help, but it would only be a temporary measure, because no antibiotic can fix the underlying problem, such as a cavity or gum disease, that may have caused such an infection.
