Nitrofur Macr 100 Mg-extreme Night Sweats Side Affect

I started this drug on April 22, taking 2 pills in less than 7 hrs, according to drs. instructions then 1 every 12 hrs, finishing on evening of April 28. Given drug for kidney infection and have never had this med before. Extremely concerned about warnings that came with it but had what I found out later to be serious side effects, i.e. cramping in legs and soaking night sweats, which are still continuing as of this date,this being my biggest concern. Drenching bed each night, changing clothes. Slight palm itching left hand and arm that is just beginning today. I am 71 yrs old, allergic to many meds and have a fatty liver and emphysema among other things. Concerned about effects on organs from this dangerous medication, but the horrible night sweats are not slowing down and I need to know if this is permanent? Also having a bit of neuropathy symptoms in left arm as well. I cannot see how steriods and Benadryl can stop the instense night sweats. My internal thermostat seems to be broken. Is there a cure for the sweating or will it eventually wear itself out? I am exhausted from dealing with it on a nightly basis. I consulted my pharmacist but have not contacted my doctor yet.

At your age, this medication usually isn't advised, since it can cause more severe side effects in the elderly.

And no, I don't see how Benadryl or a steroid would help stop night sweats either, if they did, every woman going through hormone problems in perimenopause and menopause would be taking them to avoid them.

It's now May 18, about 3 weeks since I have finished the full 7 day prescription, and have yet to find an explantion about the duration or permanent effect of this drug. I am still experiencing strong night sweats, have returned to my doctor, who has been unable to explain why there seems to be no "cure". Since this sweating(at night only) is definitely listed as a side effect for this medication, then it seems that the manufacturer should be able to explain why this drug causes this side effect in the first place. I've had blood work done with all results exactly what they should be. Dr. had suspected that the Nitrofur had somehow affected glands that control the body's temperature but the test he ordered disproved that theory. He is baffled and I am exhausted from loss of sleep. I still have a few mild side effect symptoms accompanied by extreme fatigue. It is possible that there have been no replies because it is listed as a rare side effect. I feel that my doctor made the wrong call by prescribing a drug that I have never taken, especially given my age and overall health conditions. I feel that my question regarding this drug and my particular reaction to it will go unanswered. I'll continue to hope that just even one person will (unfortuntely) have the same reaction and find their way here.
