Nightmares

Updated

has anyone experienced nightmares with Multaq? Have been taking 400mg 2 times a day for 1 month now and am at the point where I don't want to close my eyes at night (althought it's better than the alternative)....also experience excessive bloating.

The Multaq does cause bloating. You'll hear a lot of people complaining of gas issues. Multaq for me is causing Hair loss, didn't always until recently. Ive been taking it for 7 months. I get the following side effects; Hair loss, bloating, tiredness sometimes, not always, numbness in my left thigh occasionally, and ringing in my ears, this too just recently. I def would not take the drug, unless absolutely had to, which I do because of my PAC's. My Afib was cured by ablation, thank God. But since I have terrible PAC's unless I'm on this crazy drug.

The intense dreams are now starting to become nightmares. The doctors don't believe me. Thank goodness someone else does.

The doctors probably don't understand because "nightmares" aren't listed as a side effect of this drug. In the side effect list, it notes that there can be difficulty sleeping due to breathing problems, and that you'd need to prop yourself up with extra pillows in order to breathe at night if you experience this.

It also states that this drug may cause other side effects; and to notify your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication. Doesn't make sense though, when your doctor doesn't believe you. I wonder if it's worth changing your primary care doctor to someone that listens...

You can view more detailed information (including side effects) about this drug in the link below:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000511/

NOTE: you may find that some of the other side effects that this drug can cause might be contributing to these nightmares and trouble sleeping; such as, itching or flu-like symptoms that already put negative thoughts into your head.

Hope this helps!

No, David. the sleep pattern disturbances and nightmares seem to be directly connected to the Multaq for me. You definitely would have to experience this to understand the phenomena. IIt can get to be bizarre.

Taking a half dose in the evening improved things for me somewhat, so I tried going to a half dose in the AM as well temporarily as a test. That pretty much cured the night time problems as well as the daytime brain fog.

I'm not discounting an interaction with other medications, primarily Pradaxa, as a cause as well, but in any case, Multaq seems to be the catalyst.

I'm going to ramp back up to full dosage again to test the theory.

You know, I wonder if night time breathing problems might be part of it, although that is not how I experience it - that is, I don't seem to be having breathing issues when I wake up during the night.

I do have a way to tell, however, so I'll set up my "sleep lab" experiment and see if I can detect anything like that going on.

I'll post back later with the results.

My mother has been diagnosed with A-fib and placed on Multaq now that some other meds were no longer effective in preventing a-fib attacks. She is having awful nightmares and afraid to sleep even with sleep aids. The Cardiologist denied this as a symptom and states she doesn't need an ablatation or Pacemaker/Defibrillator. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

on Multag for over a month, no nightmares here, and it seems my lightheadedness has finally stopped. Otherwise, no other problems with it. Hope I can get off asap anyway.

Multaq has caused me nightmares and terrible sleep. It also makes my heart feel like it is constantly under stress and burning. I did not feel this prior to being on this drug. Absolutely have terrible ear ringing to the point I cannot even concentrate and getting to sleep it a great challenge. The ear ringing is extremely bad and just torture. I have also noticed a significant increase in hair loss. I am going off the medication as soon as possible. The side effects are very severe for me.

I am on 400mg 2x daily along with metoprolol 25mg 2x daily.
