Newbie To Adhd

Hi I am a 27 year old and I am worried that I might have adhd. I was never diagnosed when I was young because my father is a pharmacist and he always thought he knew what was best. I recently failed a couple of classes in school for the first time ever. Speaking to an academic counselor, she told me that its possible that I might have ADHD and I should seek treatment. I'm worried that, since I'm a girl, it'll be harder to get treatment for the first time in Miami. I've been reading reports about how ADHD is prevalent in men more than women, and that adderall is being limited in Miami due to student abuse. Has anyone faced difficulties in getting prescribed treatment for ADHD and can recommend good doctors that are sympathetic in the Miami, FL area? Thanks in advance to all that respond.

Hello, Stacy! How are you?

The concerns about abuse are all over the U.S., not just in your area.

The best thing to do is to see a doctor, without giving your own diagnosis. You can't walk in and just try to tell them that your ADHD. You need to set up an appointment, tell them the problems and then discuss it. At that point, you can say that this was suggested to you as a possible cause, so you wanted to look into things, but you can't make it sound like you're already assuming you have it and need a medication for it.

Have you tried asking the counselor if they have a doctor they can refer you to? Many do have such listings to help students.
