Needing To Find A Doctor Who Prescribes Pain Medicine (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have just moved here five weeks ago from Birmingham, Alabama. I now find that I cannot get a doctor to prescribe the pain medications that I have been using for some five years. I have had three cervical surgeries and one lumbar surgeries. I have among other things, degeneration of the spine. I also have a list of about seven other maladies that I can't begin to name because of their names. I am in constant severe pain without my Exalgo and Hydromorphone. I will run out in ten days and I'm told that I won't be able to even get into a doctor who prescribes these types of meds for at least five weeks. What do they expect me to do in the meantime? Does anyone know of a doctor that prescribes pain medications that doesn't have a LONG waiting list. I'm desperate. I also have to have nerve blocks and I'm WAY overdue.

Hi, This is Sharon. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. Been busy trying to find a new doctor. After going through a bad one here in Phoenix, (I moved to Peoria, Arizona!) I found a great one right in my back door! In fact, they are moving forward to try and do a neurostiumlator implant by the end of the year, because we have ran the gamut of other options and they think I am a prime candidate! Sorry I didn't specify that I had moved FROM Alabama where I left a wonderful pain management doctor! Thanks to everyone who responded with their sincere concern and hopefully the next time I'm writing, it will be about the new implant. I know insurance and cost is a big concern for this procedure, but for some, this would be a blessing in disguise! Thanks again!
That's fantastic news, Sharon! I'm glad you're getting the help you need.
Can you post back and keep us updated?
Hello, Sharon! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having.
What is your general location? You forgot to mention it, which makes it hard for anyone to recommend a doctor for you. Can you please post back and clarify? Thanks!
This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
I can may can help you.
TO: Sharon. Are you saying you moved to the Huntsville, AL, area from B-Ham? If so, you can self-refer yourself to the Tennessee Valley Pain Consultants group of pain management doctors. Their phone number is 256-265-PAIN. Their main offices are in downtown Huntsville, almost across the street from Huntsville Hospital. They are very, very good to both my husband and me, who are both chronic pain patients with them, and have been for years.
Give them a call, if you are in the North Alabama area (they have some other offices besides the one in downtown Huntsville.)
If you do have to wait too long before you can be seen, go to your local hospital's ER and tell them what's going on. Bring your prescription bottles with you. There are certain pain med drugs you should NEVER quit cold turkey on your own as doing this can cause you to have seizures, strokes, or even cause death from withdrawals from these drugs.
If you find yourself critically low on prescription pain meds before you can get into the TVPC group of pain management doctors, or any other pain management doctor for that matter, don't hesitate to go to the local ER, as they understand that certain pain med drugs simply cannot be totally and suddenly withdrawn without causing great harm and even death to the person trying to withdraw on their own from them. If you're on these certain drugs, you need to be medically managed through any withdrawal by slowly weaning you off of the drugs. Don't take any chances. If you get into trouble without having enough of the drug you need on hand, and cannot see a new doctor for some time to come, go to the ER and tell them! It could save your life!
Good luck!
You just moved where?

Hi Sharon!
I hope you are able to get the neurostimulation device! I had one implanted almost 4 years ago, and have been able to go down 91% on prescribed medications.
Take care and my best to you!
