Need Help With Side Effects From Sulfamethoxazole Tmp Ds

Friend needs help. Treated with this medication for infected skin strep. Has fever to the point of chattering teeth, major body aches, extreme fatigue, splitting headache, diarrhea. Went to doctor who just told him not to take meds anymore. Any suggestions on how to help?

Hello, Cliff! How is your friend doing?

Unfortunately, those can be side effects of this medication and, once it is discontinued, the only thing that will help is time. I had a bad allergic reaction to it several years ago and it took about 2 weeks for all of the symptoms to go away.

If his doctor approves, some Benadryl may help with some of the symptoms, as well as Imodium for the diarrhea. Beyond that, it's just a waiting game.

However, as explained by the NIH, such side effects or allergic reactions tend to just worsen with repeated exposure, so it would be best that they avoid taking this medication in the future.
