Need Help Getting Off Methadone

I've been on the methadone program for abit longer then a yr and I want to get off now, I can say for sure that I'm hooked on it.. Is it possible I can quit dry turkey? Without moving down milligram at a time or could I hurt myself by doing such a thing?

Hi Jessika! I would suggest tapering down SLOWLY or you could go through some bad withdrawals. I was on methadone and tapered down slowly and still went through withdrawals. I ended up going on Suboxone.

You should definitely NOT QUIT COLD TURKEY, especially since you've been on Methadone for over one year! Most people take the dose down by10mg until they reach 100 mg and then 5 mg per day. I went from 160 mg all the way down to 5 mg. Believe it or not, the 5mg worked and I didn't have bad withdrawals. If you taper slowly, you'll be able to take the "liquid handcuffs off!" Good Luck!

Thank u so much for the advise, the reason for wanting to quit was I recently started taking diet pills one which cleansed my body from all toxins which I believe caused the methadone not to do its job, for about a week up on till today I had some real bad withdrawals..sore legs,aching bones,mad sweats, very moody n u name it I cursed to b dead instead of feeling like I did..I seen my meth doc today I was @ 55 but now I'm down to 50 then I'll move down another 5 in two weeks... I was kinda losing hope due to some of the stories I've read on here about ever getting off this stuff but I'll keep faith in my heart n set belief to my mind that someday I'll b back to living a normal life .... Hearing that there r ppl out there who have been up to a very high dose n slowly but surly got off really helps out BIG time thanks again

I was on methadone for 8 years..so not quit cold turkey.. I went from 140 mg all the way down to 5 mg being weaned off. Still horrible withdrawls but I believe it I would of jumped straight off I would of been using again. It took me almost a year to taper off but I was on it A lot longer then u. Cold turkey is a REALLY bad idea with methadone!!! The withdrawal is 10 times worse than heroin. If you really want to get off of it, just ask the doctor at the clinic to medically detox you. They will bring you down at a rate where you won't experience the withdrawal.

I took methadone for at least 3years.weaned down 1mg every 3 weeks.still felt withdrawals through the whole 3rd week. Take your time, because besides withdrawals if u go too fast, you'll be like a zombie with no feelings and want to start using again.
