Need Help With Dr

I received a letter from my doctor yesterday telling me that he could no longer be my doctor anymore because I was an addict. My boyfriend was sitting there and acted as shocked as I was by this new development. To make a long story short, I found out that my boyfriend called my doctor's office and how many pills I should be taking 2 or 3 and that I was an addict. My boyfriend says he never talked to the dr directly and said he was just worried that I had lied to him about my dose buy I am furious. Shouldn't my dr have talked to me about this first before dumping me and doesn't HIPPA laws protect me from something like this. I have MS, a metal plate in my neck and ruptured discs in my back. I am on MS Contin 60 mg. 3 times a day. I called my dr and said I am willing to bring my pills in to let him count them so he can make sure I'm taking them correctly and take a drug test but, he refuses to speak to me. SUGGESTIONS PLEASE

No, HIPAA laws only prevent your medical information from being discussed with anyone you have not authorized to have the information. They are privacy laws, they do not prevent your doctor's office, his secretary, nurses or anyone else from listening to the concerns of someone else.

IE: Without your permission, they could not confirm or deny to your boyfriend that you are taking the medication, any details of your medical condition, or your dosage and etc.

However, they can listen to the concerns he expressed and take them seriously, if they so choose.

As to speaking to you, before making such a decision, that is entirely up to the doctor, there is nothing that obligates him to do so.

Due to the current drug laws and how careful a doctor has to be, when prescribing such controlled substances, there is a very good chance that he did this just to prevent further problems in the future. It could create serious hassles for him, if you are boyfriend also chose to contact the federal authorities, such as the DEA. It is probably a pre-emption of future problems, rather than have to deal with them, he chose to just stop treating you.

And as to suggestions, the only one I can make is that you try and find a new doctor.

If you are not in life threatening danger, then medical personnel are not required to continue to treat you or keep you on as a patient. You, or your doctor, can choose to end such a relationship, at any time, for any reason.
