Naltrexone Induced Opiate Withdrawal
UpdatedSo, I had a terrible opiate problem. Tried to quit cold turkey, was too sick, and had to do a 4 day taper. Anyway, I'm getting the naltrexone implant tomorrow, I'm only 3 days off my taper. Anyway, my question is, my doctor wants me to start with a 1/4 pill so its in my system. Now, I know I'm going to get even more sick. I've accepted that. My question is, how long will I be sick before it starts to feel better? Is it like Suboxone and after 1-2 hours, you're feeling quite a bit better, orrr...? Thanks!

Hello, Kristen! How are you?
Generally, about 3 days is the recommend time frame, to avoid severe precipitated withdrawals, so in theory, things shouldn't get much worse, but we are all different, so there are no guarantees.
And no, it has little effect on opioid cravings, or on stopping existing withdrawals, it is just used to prevent the patient from being able to continue abusing opioids. It doesn't alleviate the other issues, like Suboxone does.
Have you started it, yet?
The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, withdrawal symptoms and diarrhea.
I say yes you will have severe withdrawals. Happened to me. Get plenty of xanax and somebody to watch you. Can be fatal
With Naltrexone the sickness usually fades quickly. With H it usually takes 2-3 days. I am not sure about Fentanyl.
With Oxycodone I would guess and say less than 2 days. I would guess that Buprenorphine would be the worst.
