Naltrexone Appetite Loss And Other Side Effects

Today is day #2 for me on Naltrexone. I’m taking this (50 mg) in order to eliminate my craving for alcohol. I wasn’t sure about side effects, but my Physician told me she didn’t know of any. And I know she has prescribed this for many other of her patients - all with beneficial results. Yesterday, I felt tired after taking it, and basically had no appetite. Today is more of the same however, I believe in a slightly more pronounced way (to a greater degree). Thus far I ate a small sized leftover portion of spaghetti while at work today. But now I have no desire for supper. So I have a few questions: Will these side effects ever go away? If not, is there a good alternative to Naltrexone that doesn’t typically exhibit these same side effects? Also, how long will I need to take this for? Last night I struggled with alcohol cravings (but thankfully didn’t cave in, thank God). So far tonight if there is a craving it is much smaller than last night. So, will these eventually be enough on its own, or do people typically relapse after being taken off of this?

BTW, I have other side effects also. Lightheaded, feeling exhausted/fatigued, last night I had trouble falling asleep. And I just don’t feel like my mind is as sharp as it typically is. Decision making is a struggle and I don’t have as much motivation to do simple household chores. I’m thinking some of this is probably due to the fact I haven’t had much to eat today. I guess I might just need to push myself to eat something, but nothing sounds good right now. I feel very lethargic also. I hope these side effects go away soon, or else I hope there’s something else I can try instead. Maybe I need to give it more than just 2 days?

Hello, Louis126, how are you doing? Has there been any change?

Side effects typically hit their peak at around 4 to 5 weeks in taking a new medication, then they tend to taper off in severity, with most, or all, eventually going away entirely, as your body gets used to the medication.

And yes, it does take longer than 2 days, it usually takes that same 4 to 5 weeks for a medication to reach its full level of efficacy in your body.
