My Mini Hell

As a teenage girl I was obviously self conscious about my body. I had been on dexamethasone twice before and the side effects were minimal. There was the increased appetite and the road rage. I had not gained weight or anything. My disorder pops up for a third time, this time quicker than ever, and once again I'm back on the roids. I figured this time I would try to change for the better. When I did have my increased appetite I ate healthy foods instead of fatty greasy things. I constantly drank water and did everything to prevent gaining weight. As the weeks gradually progressed I felt something different in my face. I felt a tight pressure and my skin tightening. It actually hurt to smile. One day it finally happened. I could not fit into my pants. One day I could and suddenly getting ready for class, I was unable. I was so devastated. I asked a few friends who told me the brutal truth, they'd noticed my weight gain for weeks. At that point I felt disgusting. I didn't leave the house for weeks ( I still barely leave).I honestly wanted to give up and stop. I wanted to stop breathing. My thoughts of suicide increased while my depression took over. My disorder got better while my well being took a toll. I couldn't face my friends or family. I locked myself in my room for weeks. turns out I gained a total of 20 pounds. As I weened off of the meds I began to feel a bit better. Now a solid 2 months off of the drug I feel okay. I still have the depression, something that I will now always have, but people have said my face has gone down. I've lost about 7 pounds so far. What I am left with is the awful stretch marks. This has been the worst experience of my life and I'm sorry if you ever have to go through it.

Hello, G! How are you doing? I am very sorry about what you've gone through.

From what you've described, it seems to have been fluid retention, which steroids are well known to cause. It is listed in the side effects by the FDA, along with acne, nausea, increased heart rate and insomnia.

What do you take it to treat?

The rest of the weight should come off, very soon.
