Ms Contin With Norco Vs Oxycodone For Back Surgery (Top voted first)

Updated

I am having a second back surgery. The first time I was prescribed 10 mg Oxycodone Immediate REL Tabs every 4 hours. This time I am prescribed MS Contin 30 mg every 12 hours plus my regular medication of Norco 10-325 every 6 hours. Which is stronger the Oxycodone without the Norco or the MS Contin with Norco for surgical back pain relief. I regularly take on a daily basis Norco 10-325 every six hours prn, Metaxalone 800 mg 3x per day and Gabapentin 800 mg 3x per day. I will continue my regular prescriptions. Please advise which will be the best for back surgery pain relief.

Hello, Gary! How are you?

Overall, the MS Contin with added Norco is stronger, but only if the Norco is figured in.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Gary, I just wanted to let you know that is indeed safe for you to take the MS Contin prescribed after your back surgery along with your regular medication of Norco. Indeed it would be unsafe to stop taking a medication you take on a daily basis, and go through withdrawl along with the added post surgical pain. Ms Contin is an extended release form of morphine, and doesn't contain acetaminophen, as another poster up above incorrectly stated. So there will be no danger of additional acetaminophen from it. I hope this message gets to you in time so that you don't stop your daily dose of Norco, and take the Ms Contin along with it as prescribed for your pain. Your doctor prescribed the medication safely for you. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, and God Bless! :)

Just as an added note, you shouldn't keep taking your regular Norco does in addition to the newly prescribed one, that could result in Acetaminophen overdose, which may be fatal.
