Morphine Sulfate Cr 30 Mg (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have taken off-green color *generic morphine 30mg e.R for a number of years with good results / 4 chronic pain. Now pharmacy is giving me morphine tab - 30mg e.R made by a lab called *mallinkrt. Taking it does bother my stomach, and does not last as e.R should. Seems alot of this stuff being substituted at pharmacies. Twice I've been given this made by mallinkrt lab and it doesnt work. Anyone else having this trouble?
There should not be a difference in generic versus brand name. I take Kadian 30 and Kadian 10. Two times they have substituted generic brands and both times I went in withdrawal. I had leg cramps, severe diarrhea, headache, pain level increases, depression and more. Finally, my doctor has written the order that I only get brand name KADIAN. If the generic substitute is going to put me into withdrawal, it obviously isn't the same pill. I thought that a generic was same medicine but made by someone other than the original company. Apparently, Generic means as long as it is close they can call it the same medicine. Shame on the manufacturers.
I have problems with MSContin but that is quick release. They decided to put me on 15 mg KADIAN which is lon lasting as in time release all day- hour. I take it 3x'x a day. No problems but its not generic and costs me 50.00 each script. The morphine is supposed to also extend the life of percocet which I take 4 times a day with 3 of them being taken with the kadian. Does it work, not really. But it doesn't make me sick. There are many different kinds of morphine ER., ask your doc. Or even the pharmacist, thats what I did. He told me of different brands that wouldn't make me sick. All you can do is trial and error, really. Lisa
This month, I made the mistake of accepting Mallinckrodt Morphine Sulfate ER 30 mg as a generic substitute for MS Contin 30mg. This stuff made me sick. I still had some brand name MS Contin 30 mg (yes, it is expensive) and I went back to the brand name drug, then tried the Mallinckrodt pill, and got even sicker. Malaise, belching all day, nausea (but not the point of vomiting), stomach and intestines gurgling all day. The next day I took the brand name MS Contin 30 mg, and I felt much better. A little woozy at peak, but I can tolerate woozy; I cannot tolerate nausea all day.
What does Mallinckrodt put in these pills that causes this nausea?
Last year I was using Morphine Sulfate CR by Watson Labs. It was as good as brand name MS Contin. I called Watson Pharmaceutical to find out where I could buy it this year. Watson rep told me they had stopped manufacturing morphine.
Apparently Mallinckrodt is selling their inferior product into the void left by the Watson withdrawal from the market.
The off-green Morphine Sulfate ER 30 mg that you mentioned might be manufactured by Endo. I tried the Endo product, which is available at one local pharmacy. In my experience, the Endo product is better than the Mallinckrodt product, but not as good as Watson Labs or the brand name MS Contin.
I would be interested in knowing more about the experiences of other people who get scripts for MS Contin.
To cover the issue that Whitebeard brought up, there can be differences in generic medications.
The FDA does allow them to differ from the name brand, in the amount of the active ingredient, by as much as plus or minus 20%. They consider this an acceptable therapeutic window and for most people, it doesn't cause a problem, at all.
However, for people that are sensitive to medications, this variance is enough to cause problems, on some medications they may suffer withdrawal effects or it may not actually do the job that it is supposed to, such as for someone that takes blood pressure medications.
In addition, since generics are only required to measure against the active ingredients in the name brand, this means there can be fluctuations from one generic to another.
Thus, the one that was manufactured by Watson, which is a well-known company that has good quality control, probably had the correct amount of Morphine in it, or it was very close.
The one from Mallinckrodt might have been a little low, which could explain the problem.
And just my personal opinion, but when I was on pain management, several years ago, I was also never happy with their products. It never seemed to help as much as the Morphine ER from other companies.

Are there any other questions?
Honestly I was injured in basic training while lifting a fellow soldier in a fireman carry. He weighed 350lbs. I screwed up my back and had to leave the army. I get no VA benefits and tried to work for about 6 years b4 my body could take no more. I am taking 30mg morphine slate ER x3 daily plus 15mg oxycodone 6x daily through a pain management Dr not a prm. I am fighting disability with a lawyer that only gets paid if I win and get disability. So I recommend finding a disability lawyer for VA they advertise here in St. Louis. And get yourself a pain management Dr. They are trained to work with well chronic pain patients. Or you can move to a state that offers medical marijuana. Hopefully Missouri will join the ranks in November's vote and I can use marijuana instead of pharmaceutical grade heroine. Just a suggestion...
Yes. I've had problems. I have RSD and have been taking 100mg MS Contin twice daily for 5 years. My last RX was Mallinckrodt and I've had withdrawal symptoms for most of the day and a big increase in pain. Never happened before. Call your pharmacist immediately.
The same has happened to me. My pain management doctor changed my prescription to read "fill as written". And she writes it for Kadian 30 and same for my 10 mg Kadian. It should be illegal to sell a drug as the same med when I fact it is not the same! I have not found a "generic" for Kadian 30 mg, that works. The reason it is messing with your stomach is that you are going in to withdrawal. That is my first signal if I am late on my meds even by 2 hours. Good luck.
There can be differences in generic drugs. This is due to the fact that the FDA does allow them to differ from the name brand, in the active ingredient, but as much as plus or minus 20%. They consider this an effective therapeutic window.
A problem can arise, however, when you switch from one generic to another, because they are never measured against each other. They only have to stay within that allowable difference to the name brand. This means that one generic could have the exact amount of the active ingredient, while a different one may have less of it and, yet another one may have more of it.
As to the one you have, it is manufactured my Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals and there have been many complaints about their products not being as effective as other generics that are on the market.
The only thing I can suggest is to talk to your pharmacy and ask them to order the other one back in for you. In the past, I have taken their Morphine tablets myself and was never happy with them.

THESE THINGS SUCK I WAS GETTING 15 MG OXYCODONE AND THEY WORKED BETTER THAN THESE 30 MG SULFATE ABG MY DOC SAIS THAT THEY CANT LEAGLY GIVE OXYCODONE 30 MG AND 15 MG AT THE SAME TIME
Hey, it is perfectly legal for your doctor to prescribe the same pain medication in several dosages, or to prescribe several different ones in different dosages to help you manage your pain. There is no law against them doing that, however, they will more than likely have to account for why they did so to the DEA, which makes many doctors hesitant.
Many doctors will do so, to try to help someone get their pain under control, while not jumping to the next higher dosage, so they still have somewhere to go to help their patients in the future.
In many cases of pain management, the doctors will often prescribe a long-acting medication, such as Oxycontin or MS Contin and an immediate release, such as OxyIR, so the patient has something that works fast, while the other time released medication has time to do its work.

However, the laws are very strict on the use of controlled substances and it can be a hassle for your doctor if their decisions are questioned by the government and they have to explain why they prescribed something.
You also need to remember that your doctor isn't obligate to prescribe you anything.
Is there anything else I can help with?
Does it take 30mg morphine sulfate ER time to start working even when you have been taking 15mg for 3 months?
Tammy, it should start having some effect right away, just like the 15mg tablets did, within 15 to 20 minutes of when you take it. But, like any medication, it will take a few weeks to reach its full effectiveness in the body.
With a higher dosage, you also may start experiencing more of the side effects, which can include: nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and constipation.

I have been on morphine sulphate, Kadian for years. My current dosage is 30 mg and 10 mg one time per day. I received the generic 30 last time I refilled. I feel like I am in withdrawal. I can't sleep, I am in horrible pain, . I just think I figured my problem out. There must be a problem with the new generic 30 kadian. It is the beginning of Labor Day weekend and my pharmacy is closed until Monday. Anyone have a suggestion on what to do until Monday. I can stay in this condition until Monday. If the generic has a problem, we need as much information as possible. Likeoters, I started questioning if someone had messed with my pills. I have never had a problem in all the years I have taken it.
In my experience, Mallinkrodt makes narcotic analgesics that are inferior in strength when compared to other generics. The only exception to this is their 512 Percocet. I wanted to add that morphine has a low bioavailablity, 25%. When taken by mouth, only 25% of the drug reaches your bloodstream after going through your GI tract. On the other hand, oxycodone has an 87% bioavailability. When chosing a pain medication, unless you use it IV, in which case all pills have a 100% bioavailability, you should always take this into consideration. It's especially important to know a drugs bioavailability because it's necessary for converting doses of one drug to another.
I was taking 30mg er morphine sulfate made by that mallincrodt company and it made me sick too and I just wondered what the brand name morphine sulfate er cost is for 30 mg. The doctor switched me to something else that is way too expensive, $300.00 doe 56 tablets of opana er 10 mg er and they don't work as good for me. So I wonder if anyone knows the cost of brand ms contin 30mg er.
MS Contin is xtended release. Morphine Sulfate CONTINuous release is wht MS CONTIN stands for
30 mg Mallinkrot lasts less than six hours for me so that tid prescription leaves me without adequate coverage.
