Doctor told me to half my 30 mg. MS-CONTIN but the package said this pill should not be split. It is a small mauve pill. I believe it is time-relased.

It is recommended that an ER (Extended Release) Tablet not be split. If you were prescribed an IR (Instant Release) Tablet you should have no problem. It should state clearly on your prescription bottle which it is.
So I was given a 30mg morphine tablet to see if it would help with pain after surgery. I've never taken one of these before only Percocet and 4mg morphine. Should I be worried?? Can I break it in half, it is time release but I'm scared to take it. Any thoughts??
I am taking 10mg of morphine while waiting spine surgery I find they help with pain but knock me out for the day. Are there 5mg available because I don't think they can be cut in half?
I am on many diff Narcotic drugs & was given Morphine Sulfate 15 MG capsules time released also .
Can I split the capsule into half & get half the dose safetly
I am on many diff Narc drugs due to breakthrough pain & we still are trying to find the right combo
Thank You so nuch & Happy Weekend
NEVER split MS Contin. The way they're made makes the distribution of the medicine totally unreliable.
You may get the entire dose or no morphine at all.
Tell your doctor to read the PDR.
HI you can split the tablets as i do dont crumble them thouh you will be fine i promise my doctor told me it would be alright i hope this helps
Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I called the pharmacist and she said the pill cannot be split. There are no perforation marks. Apparently, my husband's insurance wouldn't pay for 15 mg tablets but paid for the 30 mg. The pharmacist is going to see what they can do. Thanks again
Time released (also known as controlled release [CR], or extended release [ER]) generally should not be split because of how they are designed. Do the pills in question have any score marks on them? If they are scored then you should be able to split them. If not, then I would triple check with the pharmacy to get their opinion. When in doubt I'd stick with the instructions on the label. You might even want to get in touch with your doctor (if possible) and tell them that the package specifically states not to split the pill and ask them what they think. Hope this helps!
