Under U.S. FDA regulations, tablets and capsules expire one year from when they are dispensed to you by your pharmacy, since that exposed them to the elements that can cause degradation, such as heat, light, and moisture, so under average storage conditions in most homes, that is the longest period of time they can guarantee full efficacy. Liquids, creams, and ointments may have shorter expiration dates, and capsules/tablets that are still sealed in their factory original containers usually have a longer shelf-life of anywhere from 4 to 5 years.
While the U.S. FDA requires expiration dates, an ARNP recently informed me that the U.S. is the only country that requires such and tells you to discard of old medications, unless they have become damp, discolored, are crumbling, become sour, or etc., however, I have not researched this, so I am only sharing what I have been told, your doctor should be the final authority on such a thing.
As to Morphine tablets, under the aforementioned FDA regulations, it does not become dangerous, once expired, but it may start to lose efficacy, so it may not work as well as it did, when it was new, and doubling up isn't safe due to the danger of a possible overdose, thus
they advise that you dispose of it and see your doctor for a new supply.
Jackie, as to the medication you asked about, which is a generic for Darvocet, no, you should not take that one, at all. It was removed from the market years ago, because it was found to cause various cardiac dangers, as well as an increased risk of overdose fatalities. It is no longer approved by the FDA and you should dispose of it.
Is there anything else I can ask about?
