Well first of all,Sherry, and I promise I'm not trying to be a jerk here, it's a little late to ask that question since it sounds like you've already done it. Even if the answer was yes, it's not like you can untake the pill.
Secondly, the answer depends on a few different factors that you'd have to take into account (i.e. body weight, tolerance, other meds, manufacturer, etc).
The simple answer is that you shouldn't break up time release pills. It (supposedly) makes the pill release all the meds at once rather than over an 8-12 hour period. Luckily, 7.5 mgs of morphine more than likely wouldn't do anything serious to most (if not almost all) people. It's about the equivalent of taking a 5 mg oxycodone, which, in most cases,is a perfectly safe dose. Again, I don't know a thing about your tolerance, allergies, other meds, etc, but ~90%of the time for ~90% of the people it's a safe and standard dose. All that being said, you're REALLY better off just taking it as directed and letting the doc know if the amount is too high or too low, makes you nervous,or whatever. Sorry that's so long, but I try to be thorough I guess. Hope everything turned out OK for you.
Is it dangerous to cut morphine sulfate 15 in half?
I just got this prescribed to me and I cut 1 in half.
Is it dangerous?
I realize this is fairly old, but I felt the need to reply for harm reduction purposes, as well as correctness. The pill in question is in fact a generic for MS Contin, which in fact IS extended release formulation. MS Contin is a completely different drug than oxycontin and/or oxycodone in any formulation. The MS in MS Contin stands for "Morphine Sulfate", while the contin portion refers to "continous". They are designed so that each pill, when taken whole, will release a continuous dose of morphine over a 12 hour period. Oxycontin is the same premise, but contains oxycodone rather than morphine and is generally considered the stronger medication of the two. MS Contin is generally available in 15, 30, 60 and 100 mg strengths. Also, I'll save the preaching in regards to taking a medication that is not yours and you are unfamiliar with, but narcotic pain meds in all their forms are highly addictive and can be dangerous when not used as directed. Please keep that in mind, it can be a very slippery slope, as many many people can vouch for. My .02, FWIW.
hi jesse, if that pill isn't prescribed to you, take it to whomever it was prescribed to. if i'm correct, morphine sulfate is the generic of OXYCONTIN and noooooo good unless you are suffering from a terminal condition. the quantity (15mg) is instant release, (extended came in 10mg, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and maybe 120mg (120's i've heard of but never been prescribed.
new trend among teenagers (pill parties) or what i call "rushin roulette" because they are taking pills out of a bowl on the kitchen table that hold a smorgasbord of pills, they write the identifying number letters and numbers on their hands, take the pills, and then go look up on the computer what they are and what will happen to them~~and this stuff is safer than CANNABIS?????? I really not advocate any drug use for ANYONE under 18, AT ALL!! but today, these kids think that D*A*R*E* was a lie~AND that they are invincible~~don't take pills that aren't prescribed to YOU!!!!
Hi Jesse,
The answer to your question is yes. The imprint "M MS 15" on a round blue pill has been identified as Morphine sulfate extended release (15 mg).
