Mood Swings
UpdatedI've been on 20mg Citalopram for almost 6 weeks now and don't feel any better, of anything I'm more depressed and anxious than I was before. My GP has talked about increasing the dose but I don't know wether it's the Citalopram, making me worse or if the dosage isn't strong enough. Any thoughts plaeas?

Too many physicians don't take side effects seriously, and rather than stopping the antidepressant, increase the dose. A major side effect of all antidepressants is a deeper depression. Although I'm a layman, I've been through enough therapy and antidepressants to know that what your doctor is doing is wrong. For one thing, psychiatrists should be prescribing antidepressants, not general practitioners. My advice is not to increase the dose and to seek a second opinion. Do your own research and read patient reports of adverse reactions for your drug. It's unfortunate, but when it comes to all the drugs for mental illness, little is known, despite the rosy picture painted by the powerful pharmaceutical companies. In a sense, we're all guinea pigs. A drug that may work on me, may throw another person into a psychoses. How do I know this? it actually happened to me from a popular drug that , according to my psychiatrist, was helping many of his patients. I took one dose, and felt like I had taken LSD. I immediately stopped the drug and my psychiatrist switched me to something else that worked. You may like your doctor, but his advice implies that he's not taking your symptoms seriously. It defies common sense to increase the dose of something that is already making you more depressed. The same thing happened to me on another antidepressant. The increased dose caused me to fall into such a deep hole, that I found myself sitting in bed with a shot gun. A similar thing also happened to my father. He was getting more depressed from Prozac. His doctor kept increasing the dose until I received an hysterical call from my mother that he was on the bathroom floor in a fetal position. We had to admit him to a psychiatric hospital to find out that he was suffering from serotonin syndrome. He owes his life to a foreign trained intern. He picked it up immediately.
My sincere advice to you is to find a good clinical psychologist with a PhD who practices depth psychology. Go shopping and don't settle. Don't let anyone intimidate you. When you click with one, you'll know it. Then you'll get to the root of your depression. You may just need to change jobs. Lifestyle is a major cause of depression. Take a daily walk, even if it's short. Try yoga. Exercise and Yoga have all been proven to be affective antidepressants. Remember, the drugs just cover up the symptoms and have terrible side effects. Anything related to an SSRI will likely kill your libido. Read patient reviews and you'll see that what I'm writing is true. You have to be your own advocate with any illness, but especially with mental illness. If any mental health professional gets angered because you ask questions, walk out of the office. You're the customer. It's your life. No one has a right to treat you poorly because they have a degree. I sincerely wish the best for you and will pray for your recovery. I hope I helped.
