Miralax Elimination Time

I just had a child on the 10th and the brilliant nurse at the hospital told me to take Miralax when I got home to help move my first bowl movement. Needless to say it transferred to my breastfed newborn and now neither one of us is happy. How long will it take to get out of both our systems? It's been 3 days and it doesn't look like there's a light at the end of this tunnel.

Hey, first off, congratulations on your new baby! Second, sorry to hear about what you both have been going through! I should say first and foremost that if your infant is having diarrhea then you should let the pediatrician know ASAP since it could be considered a medical emergency for the baby (they can get dehydrated very fast at such a young age).

As far as the Miralax goes, there is fairly limited information on how long it can affect you, but I did find an article about polyethylene glycol (PEG-3350) doses (the active ingredient in Miralax) from the National Institute of Health (NIH) that states "Peak PEG-3350 plasma concentrations occurred at 2-4 h and declined to nonquantifiable levels usually within 18 h after single and multiple doses, with a half-life of about 4-6 h."

So after 18 hours it should have pretty much passed through your body unless you have been continuing to take it after the first dose. I have also seen anecdotal claims that a laxative is not preferable for breastfeeding mothers, that a stool softener should be tried first.

Nevertheless since you have been in this situation I would definitely hope that things have improved since you first posted a few days ago. Can you let me know how it's going? Wishing the best for your and your baby!
