Minocycline Sulfa Allergy Er (Top voted first)
UpdatedI was recently prescribed Minocycline for some cystic acne, I ended up in the ER with a severe allergic reaction that required more than 1 injection of epinephrine. I'm aware that I have a sulfa allergy but has anyone ever heard of Minocycline causing an allergic reaction for those who have sulfa allergies? Is Minocycline safe to take if you have a sulfa allergy? I need serious responses only please!

These allergies may not necessarily be related, according to NIH reports, those who are allergic to one medication, or substance, often find others that they are also allergic to, and must avoid in the future.
What type of allergic symptoms did you experience? I am assuming they must have been severe, if they resorted to epinephrine, instead of just Benadryl/Diphenhydramine. We were relaxing in bed, last week, when my husband's lower lip started to swell. It was the weirdest thing. The only thing he had eaten close to that time was a snack bar, I won't mention the brand here, due to liability concerns, but needless to say, he gave the rest of them away. I gave him Benadryl, and Famotidine, since they are both safe for him to take and doctor approve. However, I was very worried, and didn't get a lot of sleep that night, since I was constantly checking on him, in case I needed to take him to the ER, and/or hit him with an Epi pen. (He is allergic to bees, so these are always kept on hand around the house.) It was actually about mid-day the next day, before the swelling fully went away, and we have no idea what caused it. I guess he needs allergy testing. A similar thing happened to me several years ago, and I never found out what caused it.
How much had you taken, before the allergic reaction occurred?
The FDA lists the typical allergic symptoms as possibly including nausea, headache, swelling, dizziness, itchy hives, and trouble breathing.
Re: Verwon (# 1)
I was on the medication for 10 days before the reaction occurred which was devastating! I woke that morning with a few hives on my forearm and an itching that was so deep I couldn't scratch it in that same area.
Symptoms worsened quickly from there... a rash on my torso and my lips started swelling. Immediately I took Benadryl but no relief, only drowsiness. My husband drove me to Urgent Care where I recieved 2 shots of Epinephren and was released to return home thinking everything would be good.
I did some chores around the house after I returned home and for hours seemed 'stable' though the swelling wasn't going down at least the itching had stopped so I was improving somewhat.
A bit after dinner I felt very tired and laid down for a nap. I remember my son trying to wake me and waving him off begging that I was too tired and would like to sleep longer. The next thing I know my husband was waking me and helping me dress for ER. My face/neck area had started swelling severely and I realized I was having difficulty swallowing as well as breathing. I looked like Fiona from the cartoon movie Shrek! lol So another huge shot of Epinephren in the ER as well as steroids and antihistimines (sp?) and acid reducers.... yes acid reducers to treat this! It's been a nightmare.
