Midrin Where Can I Get It (Page 2)

Updated

I have been taking Midrin for the past 10 years for migraines because I don't get any side effects from it and it works really well. Now all of a sudden the pharmacies in my area (3 of them) are saying that they can't get any or it is on backorders for the past 3 months. Do they still make it? I tried a different medication and it makes me really dissy so I really need to know how to get the Midrin. How can I get a presecription filled and where even in the mail would be ok.

Will Medicare Part D pay for compounded meds?? I need Midrin .. had been on it for umpteen years and great success for chronic migraines. So really miss it. Now I use ice packs to neck, and take two Excedrin Migraine tabs, and pray..... No lights (wear mask) and no sound, even cover my head to filter it all out!

Just found out that compounded medications are NOT covered by Medicare or most insurance companies. Asked my local pharmacy who does compounding and that is what I was told... Also, pharmacist told me that compounded drugs, made specifically for the patient, are more expensive than most generic drugs. Just FYI....

RE: the return of generic Midrin, where are you located? I am in dire need of Midrin and am eager to find it for myself. Using OTC Excedrin Migraine Tablets and they don't totally do the the trick. Having back-to-back headaches since the loss of Midrin....

I just called my neighborhood (small family pharmacy) and YES, MIDRIN IN GENERIC FORM IS AVAILABLE THERE!!!

Thanks for letting us know it is available. I thought for sure I'd be suffering forever without it! I'll be calling my doc in the morning to get it filled!

Please post!!! One company that now makes the generic Midrin is MACOVEN PHARMACEUTICALS. If your pharmacist doesn't know he/she can now look it up through this company!
Luck to you all.

I just got my precious generic Midrin at my local pharmacy. Was expensive, about $35 for 30 caps. But worth it! I take an Excedrine Migraine tab with one an it works fine. :) That is, I take it at first bit of aura I get....

JUST A NOTE --- Midrin (the brand name) was discontinued by some pharmaceutical companies, but it was on shortage. So now it is being made strictly as a generic. So call your pharmacies in your area to see who has it! We no longer have to suffer!

I just got my first bottle of generic Midrin at my local small-town pharmacy! Now no more suffering!

It appears that there is more than one compounding pharmacy out there who should be able to put the correct ingredients of Midrin together.

Northbay Family Compounding Pharmacy
Fairfield, California
(707) 421-1117

Lee Davis Compounding Pharmacy
Mechanicsville, Virginia
(804) 730-9200

I guess you can give them both a call to compare their prices and services. They both require a valid RX in order to synthesize the compound, and they should ship to any address in the USA. Hope this helps everyone!

Roy, Midrin is available now in generic form only at many pharmacies. My small-town family pharmacy has it and I just got my first bottle of it since it was shortaged! The original maker is no longer making brand. But it is generic, and they are the dark red capsules! JUST FYI :)

Thank you Patricia, that's fantastic. Would you happen to know what the active ingredients in the generic are?

The same as in old generic/Trade:
ISOMETHEPTENE MUCATE, DICHLORALPHENAZONE,
AND ACETOMINAPHEN .. Excuse spelling as I am dry-eyed and ready for bed. Hope you get what you need and everyone gets their generic Midrin back again! BTW, the cost for 30 caps was about $34.

Update #2 - Experimenting with Alternative, Good Result

Hi everyone...
I understand that generic Midrin is again available to some. Meanwhile I have been trying to wean myself off of it just in case it becomes unavailable forever, or any of it's ingredients. I'd been doing pretty good (virtually migraine free) for several months by taking a (chelated) Magnesium supplement daily. I used to have auras pre-migraine, and those have disappeared entirely. However, I did have to go to the emergency room about a month ago when my Epidrin failed (extreme migraine with vomiting). The nurse asked if I had ever tried Benadryl. (I had not). I also never realized the ingredient in Benadryl is the same as the sleep aid in Tylenol PM. I had read reviews about Excedrin from migraine sufferers on various online drugstore websites and decided to give these things a try. I have had wonderful results so far when I feel one of my tension migraines starting. I take two Excedrin Extra Strength Express Gels as directed (every 6 hours) and also one Benadryl Allergy Liqui-Gels as directed (every 4 hours). I am real surprised how well this is working for me (fingers crossed)! At bedtime if I still have headache symptoms, instead of these two meds, I will take two Tylenol PM tabs. They are essentially the same ingredients, minus the caffeine and aspirin. (So as to not have trouble sleeping). Worth a try if you can't get Midrin compounded, it's generic form, or are looking for an alternative. Good luck to all..

Lisa - I've been getting by using your same method, using the Costco Brand of Tylenol PM in the evenings and using Excedrin in the daytime. Its not as effective as the midrin but my options are limited. Good luck!

Just so you all know, Midrin IS NOW AVAILABLE as a generic. It's called Isometheptene, Caffiene, Acetaminophen or Prodrin. The old midrin had a mild sedative in it. I have also found the old type is being made again by Macova Pharmaceuticles. The problem that stopped production was that the old manufacturer was closed because they used impure or inconsistant chemicals. It is unlikely that would happen again too soon after all the hoopla it caused. Ask your pharmacist to help you find it. DO NOT pay the exorbitant prices being charged by pharmacists to have the compound made up from scratch. I have daily headaches and this is the one medication I can take regularly that doesn't make me feel stoned. If your pharmacy won't or can't find it for you, go to another pharmacy. CVS found it for me.

Thank you for this information - my pharmacist ordered this for me. I don't know how much I will pay yet, but my rx coverage is very good.

Thank you Val for the info... specifically the name & manufacturer.
Have 1-2 years' supply of Epidrin but will write this down and ask my doctor about it in the future if needed. Still doing very well with the Excedrin/Benadryl. :-)

Could you please ask your pharmacist for the National Drug Code for the generic Midrin you are getting? All of the pharmacies around here say that generic Midrin is NOT available. Perhaps a similar medication, but not the same formulation/ingredients.
