Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 59) (Top voted first)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

yoyo, no the dry eyes issue has been there for about 10 yrs. my mother had it also...that was what had me seeing this eye doc and her noticing a significant difference in me over 30 days.

I've had faint feelings but the thing I'm most concerned about is my eyesight getting worse after taking meds I almost drove off the road a few times

Metronidazole can cause "optic neuropathy." It's damage to the nerves in the eyes, and yes, it can be permanent. So if you notice that your vision is worsening while taking this drug, you need to stop now and ask for something else. Just no Cipro, Avelox or Levaquin--those antibiotics can be worse than metronidazole.

Hi... So I've been on metronidazole 400mg for 5 days as of today and was supposed to start my period 5 days ago.... However, my period has not come yet.... I have not taken a pregnancy test but my boobs are a bit sore, I'm also on a birth control pill called triphasil and today I'm finished with my red pill, but still have no period... Could metronidazole be the cause of my period being late or might I be pregnant? Pls help.

Oh, dear...sweetie, antibiotics--all antibiotics--make birth control pills NOT work. Your contraceptive is ineffective right now and will be for the next week or two.

Re: BAH (# 1154) Expand Referenced Message

There's something about the antibiotics changing your gut flora in your stomach and making you not absorb the hormones in the birth control pills correctly. I think I should correct myself--it makes the contraceptive "less effective," but not completely ineffective. Couples should still use other methods to be safe, however.

I'm soo glad im not alone.I've started taking metronidazole 500mg twice a day about a week ago, finished up on my 7th day and when i first started taking this, i felt a little dizzy, shaky and even headaches and the metal taste in your mouth, but still continued taking it untill it was finished. It was when i stopped taking the meds is when it got really bad. The next day my balance was way off and i was so dizzy, had trouble breathing, felt spacey like other people are describing, also had tingling in my hands and feet, trouble concentrating, stomach upset, can't eat, and diarrhea, I also feel like it attacked my nervous system. I had never felt this bad before in my life taking an antibiotic, it has also made me feel anxious to an extreme. I also called pioson control, and the lady said she was a registered nurse and those symptoms should have only lasted 24 hrs at the most, but the meds go out of your system 2hrs after taking them. Well I still feel pretty messed up from this whole ordeal....this is an aweful feeling, will it ever stop.

Demand to see a neurologist!! Now.. your nervous system has been damaged by this med but with physical therapy you should improve a great deal but you will have to push to make sure to see one.. My eye doctor was the one that noticed the problem and called my PC and told her to get me in to the office and see her now!! It worked.. a few months of PT and the dizziness is gone and the neuropathy that I had but I'm still very careful for fear of falling..

Re: Melissa (# 1158) Expand Referenced Message

Please go see a toxicologist at a hospital or private centre. You have been poisoned to a certain extent. I am very sick from Flagyl and have been having sudden new symptoms 6 months later.

Wow... this is really rough! So many of us have had some of the same symptoms so you are not a hypochondriac... just poisoned by this drug.. Is the c. difficile gone? Are you feeling any better at all?

Re: BAH (# 1167) Expand Referenced Message

Thanks so much for the message BAH. This forum helped me feel less alone when I spotted it. At present, I am clear of the c diff for 5 days so hopefully I don't relapse again. I'm taking really good quality probiotics which seem to help. I am also normally very fit and active, but I feel physically quite shaky and anxious, something I've never experienced before. Water really helps, I feel like if I lose the taste in my mouth it might mean the metronidazole has gone. Thanks again and I will chart progress to help others deal with this. Xx

Re: Rachel (# 1168) Expand Referenced Message

Yes, it does help to know of others and talk with them about this, and learn from each other... the taste in my mouth was so bad that I sucked on mints for two weeks, then got a raging case of oral thrush.. Recently I was advised by a naturopath to take probiotics and I said I'd not noticed it ever helped and she said you have to take it for 12 weeks.... this is the first time anyone EVER said that.. no wonder I'd given up on getting any help from it.. She also said not to take it with antibiotics because it didn't really help..but to take a lot of it for 12 weeks.. a lot meaning a high level of strains of probiotics... so I liked for the highest level possible and a liquid because after a while my mind and mouth refuses to take any more pills and I end up not taking the ones that are vital to my survival, like my thyroid meds... so I've worked out ways to get what I need in liquid form instead. Hang in there... hope that something we talk about will be helpful to you!!.
