I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

These days we need to go with natural holistic meds that don't make us so sick. I had two amoebas & took flagyl for 14 days & went on my vacation & you said it TORTURE, I was dizzy, disoriented, I also fainted, good thing my husband held me, he was that close to me, & the taste in my mouth was nasty & would not go away. Your blood work should detect if you still have pilori maybe you won't the endoscopy? I was told the same but I requested another stool recheck & it was negative. My amoebas didn't show in my stool sample., but my stomach has been messed up & not sure when I'll recoup from it but each time I eat I feel like throwing up or very bloated so I now take CLUB SODA, salt free when I need it & it works. I've had helicobacter from tainted spinach made by DOLE, crazy but they put me on CYPRO I got a blister in my tong the size of a dime & doctor said it could have turned into cancer. Good luck to you, keep finding your own info here online & the salt took care of all my past sore throats so it's a blessing to have it on our shelves. Hope you get better soon. The FDA should be aware of our side effects from these meds; they should go off the market & better & new ones should come up.

They are not using bloodwork to detect H. Pylori... first we started with a breath test... and 2 weeks of poisoning my with antibiotics.. then we'll do a stool test on Oct 8th...
Meanwhile I'm still weak and breathing shallowly - out of breath and still not eating much.. finally the taste is almost normal but it has been over a week since i took the last pill... and my tongue feels better now that I have been using the salt... about time to do it again..

If I have not killed the bacteria I'm going to talk to the pharmacist before taking any more antibiotics....he said there were effective ones with out the side effects i had...

Meanwhile i'm starting to have more pain and gas in my gut....so not thinking that it killed the bacteria.

So sorry to hear you're still not doing well. I was told that coconut water kills amoebas which is what I had but if you're on antibiotics the pilori should have been distroyed. How did you get it? For sure I'd get what the pharmacist indicated will be good for you. Give it time, sometimes you get gas from PROBIATICS too are you taking them? But also don't get discouraged because stool samples will show if you still have it since you say they no longer detect it in blood. Good luck I wish you a speedy recovery ok? I'm feeling bloated too from the effects of flagyl but also not taking as many PRIBIOTICS because I was feeling like I wasn't digesting my food, maybe it was too much I was taking 20 billion so now I skip a day or so then take them again.

If you read info on line it suggests that H. Pylori can be gotten by kissing, fecal to oral contact, contaminated water, etc but the doc says they don't know how it is spread...

I read about using salt and coconut oil to kill thrush.. I think I finially killed it by using salt about 4 times a day... my mouth feels almost normal now..

I was taking a 400 billion version of probiotics that also included prebiotics.. and eating green bananas for the prebiotics as well as jicama... my gut has always been difficult since I was a child.... but the gas and the pressure on my diaphragm is a problem.. pushes stomach up into hernia...
finished the probiotics.. have no idea if it helped.. I've used it before and never, ever was able to tell if it helped or not..

True about PROBIOTICS we just know they are good bacteria when taking antibiotics that leave us susceptible to getting sick all over again. So now see if you tolerate the liquid yogurt called KEFIR?? I put a bit of honey to be able to drink it. I got a sore throat after my flagyl of 14 days & took care of it with salt. So glad to hear you're doing well with the thrush & for me, since I felt bloated & felt I wasn't really digesting my foods, I drank the CLUB SODA, sodium free & it relieved me of the bloating. Maybe for you , your gas may get better. We have to be aware of what we eat. I wash all my leafs, fruits, avocados in a bowl with VINEGAR & water. I'm very afraid of salads since I got helicobacter once & was put on CYPRO & that was terror. hate antibiotics & all meds yet the FDA says that the side effects of these drugs are not as bad since they cure the illness. Are they kidding me???? These drugs are making people very very sick!!! Be well & God bless

Thanks Leah for your post. I now tell my doctors what to put me on, smart move, amoxicillin should work alone. flagyl should be banned. I'm trying to tell the FDA about it, there's a 1-888 number to contact them. For migraines which I suffered from for years, I used a large frozen soft gel pack & the relief was immense. We must be vigilant & tell our doctors not to be so quick to medicate us. My doctor wants to put me on depression med & I've never been depressed. She said it was something I once filled out, NOT! also she said my cholesterol was good & then she wants to put me on meds & she's my Re doctor since my old one moved to a hospital... might be time to switch again. I was prescribed metrodinazole for 1week(3x a day) but I have to discontinue after two days..5days sincestopping the antibiotics my upper jaw line and head still feeling heavy..also neck,shoulder and arm.

Im doing much better but was still having much tension and migraines. Pretty sure the withdrawals lasted some time even though I was on it 3 days only.
One natural product I have found helpful is a small bottle of grapefruit seed extract. 10 drops in drinking water kills lots of different bugs. Interesting testimonials I read and wen I tried it, really helped alot. All natural and u can take probiotics, eat yohgurt or yukult same time. I find it also helps with symptoms of IBS which makes sense as its supposed to get rid of bad things in ur gut.
Well. All the best... this drug Metronidazole has done alot of damage. Hope enough people do the research b4 they get caught on it. Btw.. When I went off it the other antibiotic was enough and the grapefruit seed extract helped too. A horrid drug that. Never again. Lol

Almost a year since i took flagyl and got so sick. Still fighting with severe fatigue and off balance and dizziness and more. When is this going to get better? Maybe never. Has anyone get better after years? Seems that The most get better over The first year or so. Im afraid i Will never get better. Has anyone suffered from supraventicular tachychardia after flagyl, like me ?

I took flagyl for 14 days for amoebas not sure where I acquired them. My mouth was extremely dry, I had a terrible equilibrium, was dizzy all the time & even almost fainted once maybe since I had an interaction with my blood pressure Med. I wrote a report complaining to the FDA & so should you. This way they will either remove it from the market or come up with a better antibiotic. They say the side effects are better than the intisl reason why you're taking it. I agree that I no longer have symptoms of the bloating & nausiousness I experienced since my recheck of stool sample came up negative; by the way, this is how it was detected not they blood tests, I believe that you will heal as I did in time.. believe that you will because the power of the mind can move mountains. Sorry to hear about you long lasting g side effects and I wish you well soon

Im trying to be positive. Because its easier to heal, i think. But sometimes i dont have any hope left

Hi Ana, I started to feel bloated each time I ate. This went on for a long time, Like 7 months or so but it got to be so bad that I knew I wasn't digesting food it was just sitting in my stomach so I asked the doctor to give me blood work & a stool test.. she first thought I had acid reflux & put me in a pill for it. I was shocked to think I had this. She then told me stop medicine and started me on FLAGYL for the 14 days. I was going on vacation and a wedding there too and it was horrible. I felt so out of touch with whom I am. I was dizzy, slurred my words, was so uncoordinated & had double vision, my equilibrium was way off and I knew this was all the effects of those nasty chalky horse pils but I kept taking them saying "soon it'll pass". I thank the Lord I recovered because I know others still suffer the effects. Please report it to the FDA they need to know. You can get info on FDA online and there is also a number to call. Be safe, ps l wash all fruit and veggies thoroughly in vinegar because we get a lot of bad bacteria from these.

How long has it been since you took the med? How are you feeling now? It's been 5 weeks for me now and I've done the stool sample to see if I still have the bacteria....I'm not positive that it is gone but I'm not going to take another round of that stuff... at this point I still have no energy, my legs feel weak most of the time, my balance is off and I'm afraid to go out into the garden by myself and pick veggies because I keep having trouble with my balance... it took a week and half before that terrible taste went away after taking the pills... hope you are getting better.

BJH sorry to hear you still have the effects but it does wear off as for me immediately at the time that I stopped with required med. I don't have anything wrong anymore but it is a horrible med & FDA should be notified, please let them know that you are still feeling weak etc. Be well soon keep thinking positive and do affirmations they help you get and heal sooner

Well, they think that all is well now that we've killed the bacteria.. and I am to wait until the 24th to have endscopy... which will tell me if my hernia is bad or not... but that may not relate at all to the fatigue. and balance issues..

The fatigue and The balance issues are from flagyl. Its a terrible medication. I live with severe fatigue and off balance and dizziness and much more since flagyl . I hope you heal over time, many do.

This is definitely not the norm. I am still having side effects 5 months later. I hope you are one of the lucky ones!! This is a horrible drug &a people need to be made aware of the risks!!

Yes I'm one of the few that was fine after I had ended dosage, bacteria gone & effects gone. I tell everyone here to write to the FDA because the more complaints the quicker they'll see how bad this drug is & give us a different one. I can tell you that because of another helicobacter pilori I was put on CYPRO & this was very strong also that it created an ULCER in my tong the size of a dime &. The doctor said it could have turned into cancer... I was floored when I heard this but he gave me a great canker sore cream that took care of it. We can't help but get these bacterias although we're all so careful but still get contaminated. I can say I've been blessed to live in USA can't imagine other countries with no FDA control over what we are prescribed & the side effects. Do your daily affirmations & I wish you a speedy recovery you've suffered enough. ????

Erin, I had no idea that there were so many risks involved with taking this. I usually do really well with antibiotic treatment, but this one has made me miserable. I also have an Iud (Skyla) and plan to have it removed after having it almost a year. I have felt new side effects since having it places as well. It's very concerning to me that these medications aren't looked at more closely, before issuing them out to people. I'm going to demand blood work, and anything else that I need to be checked, because this is not normal. I was put on Metronidazole for BV, and it is seen more in women with Iuds than those on other forms of birth control. I will be speaking to the FDA about Metronidazole for sure. Seems to me medications cause more problems than the ones you initially go to the dr to get treated for. Thanks for all of the info, Erin. It was very helpful!
