Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 36) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...
I really think everyone should write in to Dr Phil. It would be a great way to force attention on this medication. Also I see that it is affecting women a lot more than it it men. Could be cause the med is prescribed more to women, not sure. But most men I've seen have bad side effects from it recover a lot fast than the women.
Hi Luna
Here in sweden it is more prescribed to women because The gynecologist are prescribing them alot here, even to pregnant women they told me. They are also using them for tooth infection alot. Its a scary medication and The sad thing is, that when People go back to their doctors they say "Ohhh no it cant be flagyl and The medication is out of your system a long time ago " and they blame it on depression and so on. So its scary that a lot of People is damage from flagyl and alot of more antibiotics out there , so they use it Again and Again and Again on People.
a few years back I wrote to Dr. Oz. I was called two hours later to see if I would go on a show about chronic pain. It was a joke. Because J&J is a sponser, I was not allowed to say the name of the medication that caused this--for me Levaquin. The women, also, on stage were allowed to talk about their car accidents but I was not allowed to say the name of the medication--and oddly, compared to just those two women, I was damaged much worse from the levaquin. I would have been a chance an it was not allowed. Yet, they still called trying to get me on the show for a few weeks. If only they would allow me to state the truth.
I stopped taking metronidazole on Sunday and feel worse than when I started blurred vision panicked attacks numb tongue and troat and very weak
I'm glad to hear you have recovered I was given this med like once every other month for at least last year prior and few times couple previous years. I'm so scared because. After horrendous reaction I had to b12 shot I have been slowly going down hill and wondering if I need b12 or developed pernicious anemia. I'm thinking I have some malabsorption problems. Terrible issues with memory brain fog depersonalizations, weakness all over, shortness of breath. I'm soo scared and no Drs are helping. I don't know what to do anymore next month it will be a year, very depressing I hope this is not permanent or continues to be progressive. Family and friends have no clue and feel helpless as do I.
Shog, some people recovery pretty quickly from Flagyl, and other people take more time. So if you don't notice you're in the quick recovery group, don't feel discouraged. Just because it takes longer doesn't mean it won't get better. Just don't have any doctor tell you, "once the drug's out of your system, you should be fine," nonsense. They are clueless when it comes to adverse drug reactions--it's even on the FDA label that this drug can still affect you even if it's out of your system.
I took this medication abs i am feeling the same way you described. I wonder if you feel better yet and what did you do to help improve it. Did they take mri of your head?

I feel the same when to the ER Doctor gave me different Antibiotics to take for 2 weeks after I finish taking those pills open up my sinuses that everything I cook and water stink to me like a bad oder. But I still get the pain. Now they gave me Metronidazole to take 2 time a day for 14 day and I'm scare reading the side effect my stomach is swollen can't breath normal it drive me crazy What am I suppose to do HELP
Hi ritza
If I were you, i would talk to The doctors, and change antibiotics. I was eating flagyl (metrodinazole), stopped it over 5 months ago, and I suffer every day. I wish i never took flagyl. If I could turn back time, i would
Ritza, if you're having difficulties breathing and bad stomach pain, then it sounds like you need to talk to your doctor and try another antibiotic. Metronidazole has a lot of side effects and it's one of the hardest medications to take--period. I also experienced breathing problems when I was taking it. If you have to lie to your doctor and tell them it makes you so nauseated you're throwing it up, then do it. If you can't keep it down, then you can't take it. They'll have to give you something else. Just don't take any of the fluoroquinolone antibiotics--Levaquin, Cipro and Avelox--they can be worse than metronidazole for some people and have many black box warnings, which are the worst warnings the FDA can give a drug.
I took metronidazole for two weeks inorder to treat helicobacter at the last three days of my course l felt eye pain and didn't recognise it should be related to metronidazol since stop taking metronidazol still have had eye pain .Im so worried .do you have any suggestion to get rid of this problem?
Hi, Zo. Metronidazole is linked to optic neuropathy--that doesn't mean that's what you have, but the drug can definitely affect the eyes. I would suggest to see an eye doctor and bring in the FDA warning about the drug (Google "FDA label metronidazole" and it should come up). Maybe they can give you some eye drops to help calm down the pain.
Same thing happened to me. I told the doc. About tingling in hands and feet and he told me to keep taking it. So I did, huge mistake!!!
My hands are fine now but the neuropathy in my feet is miserable. It's probably been 5 years, no relief. I was on flagly/ metronidazole 500 mg.3x/ day for months, for crohns disease. God bless you.
I stopped taking this med a week ago and I have had headaches all day every day since. My Migraine pills don't even help :( That is really the only side effect but will it ever stop ?
Stop taking flagl 4-13-16 still feeling bags
The cipro what made you dizzy been there .U mm make sure you eat a full course meal before take any medicines.
How long did your symptoms persist.... I took this horrid medicine for four days and two days later I still feel the dizziness confusion and drugged feeling you were talking about. The doctors think I'm crazy and keep telling me maybe I caught the flu...
Kdm, doctors are i****s when it comes to adverse drug reactions. Metronidazole causes cerebellar and general central nervous system toxicity, and can absolutely cause all the symptoms you're describing. Unfortunately for some people, the effects don't stop just because you've stopped taking the drug. It doesn't seem to have affected your motor control, so that's good. Google "Metronidazole-induced Central Nervous System Toxicity" and also "FDA label metronidazole." The FDA label has the whole list of warnings about this drug and adverse reactions (pages 8 and 13) and there is a systematic review about metronidazole-induced central nervous system toxicity you can pull up as well off of Google (not FDA related). Your doctors can't do anything except treat the symptoms, but maybe at least you can get them to take your concerns seriously. In any case, welcome to the club of disbelieved patients. I'm sorry you've become a member. :(
