I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

Thanks for sharing that information Erin. You're right, when I looked at the article about delirium again it talked about the encephalopathy and abonormal brain MRI scans. They only mentioned it in a few articles.

I looked into serotonin syndrome when I was first sick. A lot of symptoms match but many don't. The drug causes damage at the back of the brain. That doesn't make it permanent, though--the brain doesn't heal but it reroutes signals. It heals in its own way. But it takes a long time.

I also read that the majority of the serotonin is found in the GUT. Maybe that explains why the symptoms take a while to go away ( it can take 6 months to a year to replenish the gut).

I looked at serotonin syndrome and I have many of the symptoms but I think it may have affected me in other ways : joints, skin, short-term memory.

My doctor said I could have serotonin dysregulation. I had read that metronidazole can increase serotonin similar to MAOI anti-depressants but I haven't found a lot of literature on it. It also binds to a certain receptor but that is beyond my scientific knowledge. I also read that for metronidazole it can cause in some people a sort of delirium with associated symptoms that takes weeks to appear after stopping the medication and even longer to go away. I read that was an analysis the scientists had done of different antibiotics. For the others antibiotics, the delirium went away when stopping the medication or within a week.

My symptoms have cycled as well. Good days and then bad ones. I talked to a neurologist about it, and he said that's normal for central nervous system issues. Ironically, he didn't believe me about the metronidazole doing this, but that was one bit of info that was helpful.

My symptoms slowly improved over time, but it followed that same cycle. I still have some lingering things but they are no longer disabling.

Yoyo, I've been in a cycle like that, too. It's depressing when you think you are finally getting through it and then it comes back. I've been having a not-so-good day today, so I was thankful for your post. It helps to knkwnwe aren't alone. It's almost 5 months for me and I just want to be myself again!

I had similar symptoms plus muscle twitching and jerking when going to sleep and waking up. Also lost my muscle and muscles felt like jello. It has been two months now. How long did it take for your symptoms to subside ?

I took metronidazole in April 3017, I had severe diarrhea at this time I noticed a weakness in the right side of my face and a twich. Is this from the meds and could it be permanent.

Thank you, TeeLee. It's good to know the forum is helping. And thanks for the tip about juicing. I've gotten into fruit smoothies myself (vanilla nutritional drink + kefir + frozen fruit)--ninja bullets are awesome. :)

I just want to say thank you to all of you for posting your experiences, you have no idea how much you've helped others struggling to get their lives back after this awful drug. I usually don't post replies- but I also have had my life on hold since January. The metro is the main cause, but it started from being over prescribed dental antibiotics for a root canal back in december. So I'm 6 months out, still having major waves of depression & my short term memory is nonexistant, joint aches, but the balance issues & visual issues are mostly gone, my neck only hurts a little & this week I actually had some energy to exercise again. I talked to someone who is dealing w/ floxie side effects and she said the only thing thats helped her is celery juice- she drinks up to 16 oz per day when she can. I started feeling a shift after 2 days of it, then I started juicing the celery & adding cucumber, spinach, blueberries, any super food to help w/ detoxing. I also add in a green powder that has all the major vitamins and supplements you can find it at any local healthy market. I'm hoping I don't have to go thru another low episode like the last one, at least I have my husband to help me thru this. But thanks again to all of you, it really has helped so much.

Thanks Erin for the reply. I had been looking at the floxed report trying to correlate symptoms and thought that because the fluorquinines were more widely prescribed, that is why there is a lot of information about it.

Metronidazole is not a fluoroquinolone. The cause of the toxicity is not the same (as best as I can tell). Floxies suffer from mitochondrial DNA damage. Metronidazole is a neurotoxin that causes lesions on the back of the brain. Metronidazole has a better recovery rate but again, it's no guarantee.

That being said, floxies also suffer neurological damage because there's a lot if mitochondrial DNA in the brain. So the central nervous system effects for both drugs are similar.

Yoyo, if your doctor or neurologist did an inkling of research, they'd know that the only thing that can detect issues with metronidazole is an MRI. But even that can't show everything, especially weeks after taking the drug.

The drug is a neurotoxin, and it causes a hefty stack of symptoms. Most people do make a full recovery but there is no guarantee. The psychiatric issues seem to have the best chance at a full recovery. I'm two years out and still have some lingering issues, BUT I'm working and am happy, and the problems are minor compared to what they were when this first happened. The best healer is time.

I am sorry you're going through this. There are warnings on the drug's FDA label about its cerebellar toxicity, but doctors don't look at drug warning labels. If you plug "metronidazole toxicity" into your search engine, you'll see for yourself. I wish you luck.
