Metoprolol Losing Effectiveness Over Time?

Updated

Can Metoprolol become less effective at reducing heart rate over time?

I've been taking it for about 2 years now. About 6 months ago my heart rate returned to its prior levels (high 50s for resting and low 60's for walking, etc). Nothing bad, but it was a curious step function in the charts. When the drug was working, it had reduced those levels by about 10 beats/minute.

My cardiologist doesn't know of any reason why this should happen, so I'm checking to see if others have seen this..

I started to take a GLP-1 (ZEPBOUND) around the same time and wonder if that could be related.

Metoprolol doesn't usually "wear off" the way some medicines do, but people can see changes in how it affects their heart rate over time. Sometimes your body just adapts a bit, or other things in your life change - like stress, sleep, weight, caffeine habits, or activity level - and those can make your heart rate drift back toward its old pattern. It doesn't mean the medicine suddenly stopped working, just that your overall system might be influencing the numbers more than before.

Starting a GLP-1 medication like Zepbound could play a role, but not by cancelling out metoprolol directly. GLP-1 meds can affect hydration, blood pressure, and how your body handles exercise or weight changes, and those things can all subtly influence heart rate. Nothing dangerous, just shifts that add up.

The important part is that what you’re seeing isn't unheard of, even if your cardiologist hasn't seen a clear reason. As long as your symptoms aren't worse and your doctor is keeping an eye on things, it's usually not something to panic about. If the heart-rate change ever comes with dizziness, chest symptoms, or you just feel off, that’s definitely something to bring up right away.
