Metoprolol And Nerve Pain
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I was on Metoprolol XR for 6 months, the most consistent dose was 50 mg once/day. I had many of the common side effects - fatigue, headaches, muscle pain - but the most distressing has been the cold hands and feet along with an intense burning feeling along the nerves in my arms, legs and face. I tapered off over the last month I was on it, but the nerve pain seems worse. I have been completely off the med for only 3 days now. Has anyone experienced this? Does it get better or am I doomed? I'm only 33 with 2 young boys. I would like to be able to enjoy them!

I typed out a whole response, but it must not have posted successfully!

I actually decided not to go on a different med. I was only on the metoprolol for comfort since the PVCs were driving me crazy. Turned out I had a really hard time with the metoprolol. After seeing a second cardiologist, I was less stressed about the PVCs, and he helped me taper off. Now 2 weeks out the symptoms I described are improving. I still have some very slight burning in my joints from time to time, but it is not constant, and it seems to move around my body. The fatigue has improved, and the muscle pain is getting there. My PCP is actually wondering about drug induced lupus because some of my blood work was a little funky, and it never has been before (and I've had a lot of blood drawn over the last year due to SVT and my ablation!). I go back on April 2nd for a follow up and I'm going to repeat the blood work to see if it changes at all.

I've read and heard of other people having great success with this drug, but not me!

Hello, Melissa! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem you had from this medication.

Yes, if it was solely due to the Metoprolol, it should go away entirely, but it may take a couple of weeks to fully taper off. The FDA classifies this medication as a beta blocker and some people can't tolerate them. In such sensitive individuals, it has also been known to cause hypotension and hair loss.

What did you replace it with?
