Metoprolol And Itching
(Newest replies first)
Updated
I have been taking 25 mg metoprolol and 400 mg magnesium oxide for atrial fibrillation for about a month. Over a week later a bad rash developed on both hands and one hand is red and puffy. Got off the mag oxide since I thought that was what caused it, but the side effects have gotten worse. I can't stand the itching. Afraid to go off both meds, my doc has not been much help and I feel confused. I never took any pills before this. I am 69 years of age. I need it to work really badly, what do I do?

I take gabapentin and doxepin to stop the effects metoprolol. This has been going on for three years.
Hi Linda, sorry to hear about the effects that you're experiencing. It sounds to me like you may be having an allergic or more serious reaction here, so I would recommend reporting all of this to your doctor if you have not already done so. The reason I say that is because you may need to be put on a different medication, and only they can do that since they should be familiar with your medical history. What's weird is that I check on the FDA site and I didn't see itching or rash to be a side effect of the metoprolol. Just so that I understand what you said in your message, are you saying that you DID stop the magnesium oxide, but are still having the itching and rash? I would need to be determined exactly which one of them is giving you the bad reaction. I hope this helps a bit. If you have spoken with your doctor, what did they say?
