Hello,
Based on my research, U.S. prescription medications are required to have a mandatory expiration date of 1 year from the date the prescription is filled. After a year is up, the medication should still be safe but it will start to lose its potency and can no longer be as effective. However, there are some medications that can become dangerous after they expire. That being said, it's best to not take any medication after its expiration date.
The medication might have a label that explains how/where it should be stored, but if not, I would ask the pharmacist. It's usually best to keep medications in a cool dark place.
I hope this info helps!

That's a STUPID answer - "However, there are some medications that can become dangerous after they expire." A lousy attempt to scare the daylights out of the questioner! After making that statement, you should have said, "but Metoprolol is NOT one of them!" We all can understand that medications lose their effectiveness over time at home, but in an emergency, as is known to happen, we may have to take old meds temporarily, ALL WE NEED TO KNOW in those cases, is that we won't die directly as a result of taking the expired med SHORT-TERM!
