I am a 85 year old male I've had a by-pass surgery 2 years ago. I can't get an appointment until May with my Dr. I am having trouble sleeping at night, and I am always tired. What can I do help Jim

Did you explain the problem, when you called your doctor's office for the appointment?

Fatigue can be a warning sign for a heart patient and they should pay attention to that and get you in for an appointment immediately.

From one heart patient to another, if they aren't willing to fit you in any sooner, then I can tell you it's time to find a new doctor. They should not play around and delay seeing a heart patient. If I call my doctor with a problem, I get an immediate response and if it requires an appointment to check me out, I've never had to wait more than a few hours.

What medications are you on? They may also contribute to the problem. There are some medications, such as the Beta Blockers, that should be taken around the same time, each day. If you don't, then your heart rate and blood pressure can be elevated and this may result in problems with insomnia.

One of the medications I'm on is Carvedilol and if I take it late, then I know I'll be unable to sleep for several hours, because I can feel my heart rate climb, because missing these medications or taking them late causes a rebound effect.

As I said, elevated blood pressure can also contribute to problems sleeping, do you happen to know what your readings are?

Some other things my doctor has me take to help my heart, overall health and energy levels are various supplements, such as Fish Oil and a good multi-vitamin. Have you tried adding anything like this into your daily routine?

Fish Oil is very good for the heart and entire cardiovascular system and a multivitamin is almost always a good idea for heart and blood pressure patients, because there are various things, such as Potassium and Magnesium that your body needs certain amounts of. A deficiency in them can cause or aggravate cardiac conditions.
