I am a 35 yr young man, working on cruise ships. I had varicose veins on both legs & had a vascular surgery done on my legs, after which I was advised to take walks by the doctor. However, when I brisk walked. I felt like on those days my pressure would rise. I get very upset & irritated about most things especially on those days. I do have high blood pressure too. When I approached my vascular surgeon, he prescribed Metolar XR-25. My questions are: Is it ok for me to be taking this medication at this age? If yes, then for how long do I need to continue this medication? What do I need to do to improve my condition without the medication? Will exercise help & what kind of exercises should I do? Kindly advise.

Hi, Lenny!

What were your blood pressure readings that resulted in him prescribing this medication?

You don't normally feel high blood pressure, so you wouldn't feel as if it were rising with exercise and irritability isn't a symptom of it. That's not how it works. There are very good reasons it's been nicknamed the "silent killer" because it rarely causes symptoms, so people don't know they have it.

Additionally, your blood pressure should fluctuate with exercise, that's completely normal.

I may be able to help you more, if you can post back with more information. Thanks!
