I had neck surgery on a disc and after surgery was prescribed this med in January to reduce swelling in my neck and now I'm still having trouble swolling and they put me back on this medicine in March is this normal : had a new disc put in neck

Did they provide you with a diagnosis?

It is highly possible for swelling, or scar tissue to cause problems long after surgery, even when it seems that the rest of the recovering is done.

Is the medication helping?

The FDA classifies this as a steroid that is used to treat inflammation, allergic reactions and swelling. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, acne, weight gain and fluid retention.

It's difficult to say what is normal, after such surgery, because everyone is different and will recover at a different rate.

Prescribed Methylprednisolone and a medrol pak after micro L4-5 bilateral discectomy surgery 9 days ago. Blood pressure was very high so after 6 days had to stop it. Never got to the Medrol pak! What withdrawal back and hip pain began within 24 hours.After surgery felt good. Know it's antiinflammatory not analgesic but never realized the agony with stopping it cold turkey. My ankle edema continues! I'm a nurse, too, and didn't realize the pain would set in so acutely. The Neuro nurse warned me. Sharing this to possibly make others aware. I'm tempted but will not resume taking that other Medrol 6 day dose pak! Never had major surgery but this one day micro ambulatory surgery not a simple procedure or walk in the park!
