Methodone With Oxycodone Safe? (Top voted first)
UpdatedI am curretly taking Oxycodone. I was taking Methodone, and I am still having no luck with my pain and all the doctors I have seen won't give me anything stronger. Can I take both kinds of pills to help get rid of the pain?

Its not a good idea at all! Your doctor may have short changed you when he did the conversion? I took Methadone for 11 years before switching to Oxycontin 3 months ago. The switch was very difficult! I had Methadone withdrawals for 3 weeks which made my pain even worse. I continued to hurt much more than I ever had while taking Methadone but my pain doc wanted me to give it 2 full months. I was about at wits end when the 2 months were up. That's when my doc reworked the conversion and admitted he short changed me because its not a straight across conversion. 10mg of Methadone is equal to about 20mg of Oxycontin. Actually its closer to 22.5mg. I was taking 160mg a day of Methadone. 40mg every 6 hours. I started out taking 320mg a day of Oxycontin which was the 2 for 1 conversion. 80mg every 6 hours and never could get on top of the pain. Last month my pain doctor increased my daily dose of Oxycontin by 80mg and I'm doing much better! I now take 160mg twice a day or every 12 hours and I have 40mg 2 times a day to take in-between. Its working so well I'm thinking of talking to my doctor about maybe cutting back to 140mg instead of 160mg and see how I do? It hard to find a balance when you hurt so badly all the time. I have had chronic pain for 18 years now from 6 seperate spinal fusion's with new hardware each time.
HI Mindy,
My doctor had me taking 100mg of methadone and 40 mg of oxycodone at the same time. It was very effective for the pain, but it kept me so drugged I couldn't function. There are alot of comments posted about the withdrawls of methedone. My doctor weaned me off in 15 days. It wasn't bad at all. To stop cold turkey would be extremely rough, but the way my doc did it, I never even noticed any type of withdrawl symptons..But both drugs in combo are a very good way to combat pain..You just have to find the right dosage. Good Luck!
I take 80mg of METHADONE and 120mg of MORPHINE daily. I take the drugs mainly for their low cost; my doctor works with me really well. HOWEVER, THIS COMBO DOES NOT REALLY HELP MY PAIN. Does anyone know of a stronger pain med and a stronger breakthrough drug that is cheaper?
Hi Wayne,
Keep the methadone, it is about the best drug for pain. Morphine has never helped me. Oxycodone is much better for the pain, and it's cheap. If you don't have a prescription card to help with costs, there are patient assistance programs that can help. You may be able to get your meds free! I've used the Patient Assistance program in the past, and I got all my pain medications free. It's just a thought. I hope you find relief for your pain.
Yes, you can.I take 10mg. of methadone 4times aday and 80mg. of oxycotin, I was on 150mg. of meth till that new law came out a few months ago where you can't get 40mg.diskets, unless you go to a hospital. The doc tried morphine sul. and ect.. till last month he prescribed that and it seems to work for now, and I have a epi iinjection schuduled on the 9-22-08 for my back. I know its tough but hang in there. God Bless and be thankful for the good things' and pray , Sincerly ,excuse my spelling, Bob inN.J>

A lot of people don't know methadone blocks opiates, painkillers are opiates so figure it out, have a nice weekend
I had exactly the same problem. Methadone has a long half life, it means withdrawal can last 3 months, this will affect the potency of your oxycodone. I study medications of abuse. Rotation (meaning using one opiate then changing to another in rotation) is scientifically ideal as it deals with tolerance. As methadone acts on your receptors completely then once addicted (like myself, it is the worst opioid of all to stop). I was given oxycontin and after 7 hours (suppose to act for 12) I was in full withdrawal. I am lucky to have been educated to certain medications and in a position to tell my doctor what is needed.
I was given dihydrocodeine (not enough probably to teach me a lesson in being a smartass) online pharmacies did the rest. Recently I am back on oxycontin for financial reasons, it's been 9 months since I last took methadone. They work as expected but my serious injury means I need a dose alteration. This I will get as I take far fewer opiates than my surgeon recommended. I take you mean Methadone tablets alongside your oxycodone. In this case the methadone should be reduced as your oxycodone is increased. Or substitute methadone with another opiate. I use dihydrocodeine as it's the tried and tested method for stopping opiates. Good luck
