Methadone Stopped My Periods (Page 5)

Updated

Can any of the women out there tell me if taking methadone stopped thier periods? I have been on methadone for 4 years now and as soon as I went over 35mg it completely stopped and It has not come back since. I am on 60mg now. I did get lowered to 30 mg at one time years ago and it started right up again. Does anyone know if this might be dangerous? I have asked my doctor at the meth clinic and she stated its nothing to be concerned about because I wanted to know if I should be taking something to make it start and she said no, but for some reason it seems that it just does not sound good for a natural process to stop like that and not have it do any harm. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Are you a doctor? The worst thing that you could do if you are pregnant is stop taking methadone.

The same thing happened to me.. I had my cycles for a year after I started methadone but they was irregular then one day they stopped and a haven't had a cycle since. I live in a rural area and our clinic is somewhat new although that was 6 years ago and I still haven't had a menstural cycle..

I have been a Junkie for a couple of years... I am now on Methadone 70mgs a day and I have not had a period in a long time probably since before I became a junkie. I do not wish to be on methadone for a long period of time. As a matter of fact after I have been on 70mgs. for two months I plan on going down 5mgs a week. I really want my periods back I still want to have a baby. I hope that all this time without my period will not prevent me from getting pregnant once I am done with the methadone.

Wow! I haven't had my period in over 3yrs. I 43 so I thought I had abruptly started menopause..in addition my husband suddenly died almost 3 yrs ago and the greif and stress seemed like it could stop my heart beating so why not stopp my period. I have been on 100ml methadone for almost 4 yrs but never made the connection unti I screwed up missed 3 days in a row and on day 3 started my first piriod in over 3 yrs I mean from never spotting to full blown piriod. Still didn't make the conection untill finding thid thread on this sight after searching for answers as to why I had started again. I am dumb founded that my counsoler(s) never gave me any clue this could happen. Ofcourse this must be connected but why I would like to know. Will do some research now that I know.

Yes it is worth it the key to methadone is to still do things that you would normally do before getting high don't be lazy! You can still go to college, read or watch educational channels on t.v. our brain need to exercise too, watch what you eat, have some self-discipline in your life. Our body is lazy so we have to stay functional. Methadone does have side effects but all medicine does!!! I am blessed to have got the help from the clinic there is a lot of pros to this program!!

When I was 18 years old and went to the clinic I was at 50mg and my period stopped- I got out of the clinic at 19 which was awful but awesome. I ended up back in the clinic at age 25 this time my dose was 111 and my period never stopped (meaning I was regular). Now I am at 32 mg It's not easy I have been at the clinic 4 years this time- guess I have a good memory of the pain from when I quit the clinic when I was 19. I am 29 yrs old now and I go down 1 mg every Friday. I want my life back, or should I say I want a new better life. I agree with you it cant be healthy to not have a period it cleanses your body. I wanted to tell you that methadone for a long time isn't good. I use to only drink water and after a while at the clinic I began to drink only Sprite not to mention It hard to wake up and keep awake. Methadone is great but not something to take for the rest of your life because it causes a lot of negative lifestyle changes. Too much sugar will make you sick. Good luck to you and God bless you and heal you on your journey. :-)

There is a pill that you can get from your doctor that will start your period. I went through all of this. I think I may have posted the name of the medication in one of my earlier posts. I was taking it once a month for a couple days and my period came every time. After a few months, I stopped taking the medication and my period was still coming on its own, however, I started only getting it once every two months. I have also come down from 160 ml to 102 ml. That may also have helped. I have been trying to conceive for almost a year and it is hard when you only ovulate once every two months. I am happy to say that I am expecting. So for all of you that are scared about not getting your period and would like to have children, just hang in there and don't get too discouraged.

Hi, I was reading something online about not getting your period on methadone and you replied with the side effects you have and I just wanted to tell you I have the EXACT same ones. But I would say my constipation is more than just a "pain." That's the worst one for me, partly because I had cancer about 7 years ago and lost half my bowels so that makes it even worse. I know that post you wrote was from a couple of years ago, so I'm not sure if you wl even get this, but if you do, could you email me back at {edited for privacy} and let me know how you're doing now? Did you ever get off MMT? Did your period ever come back? I haven't had mine since before I got pregnant with my son, and I was still nursing him at about a year old just a little at night tho, when I started at the clinic so I thought that was why but it never came back yet even. Also, all I want to eat are sweets. It's bad. Sometimes I just live on yogurt. Wtf? Even when I get pizza now I like to order BBQ pizza. Cuz the BBQ sauce makes it kinda sweet I think! But even worse is I'll call them up and just order their cinnamon breadsticks for lunch when my sons at school sometimes! I never would have been like that. I rarely ate desert. Oh well, I'm tapering down now, blindly so I can't talk myself into thinking I feel it when I go down. I think I'm around 90 now. It will be five years in June. When I first started, I was sure I would have to be on it for life because of how depressed I would get whenever I was off opiates, even for weeks or months at a time. But now I have hope. I don't believe I'm doomed, lol. I hope you're doing wonderful and thanks for taking the time to read this.

Please get your facts straight before posting such ludacris information about Methadone! People like you, mislead the general public about this lifesaving drug!! Actually, you don't need to be on this forum 'MMT and the menstrual cycle' if you have these feeling about the drug. Good bye! :-)

I was taking oxys, percs, hydromorph contin, dilaudids for 2 years, then switched over to methadone 7 months ago and I havent had a period since I started the methadone. Before that my periods have been very regular my whole life. My Dr said there was nothing related to birth control in the methadone and offered no explanation as to why this happens but another girl i know had major changes in her periods too, like light to no periods. Its definitely from methadone but im not worried about it. im 35 and have 3 kids and tried oxys with my third which was an emerg c section and then hot hooked. but im at 170mg now and will start going down very slowly soon.

It's definitely the methadone. I've noticed the cycles of clock setting-regularity when not on opiates or low doses of methadone - to stopping all together when I'm on anything over 50mls (1/1 solution - UK). Each time I have reduced, it takes a while, but somewhere between 10 - 0 mls, I end up bleeding really heavily. As if all the months/years missed were coming at once. Without wanting to be too graphic, I'd be losing large lumps (of lining?) - nothing at all like my previous cycles which were regular and of normal /medium flow.

It's as if my body saves it all up, then when the depressant effects of the opiates are reduced, my body gets itself together and musters enough energy to expel all the build up **
** Disclaimer: this is my very NON-medical interpretation. It's how it appears to me, and not necessarily medically/biologically accurate.

I consider it bad karma :-| lets face it - it really is the last thing you need when detoxing and going through withdrawals ;-)

Same story here!! I have been on MMT for 10 months, and haven't had my period since it began. I did try birth control (just the pill), and my period came back. However, the gyno informed me that it isn't a real period on the pill, it's called "breakthrough bleeding" but it is still enough for me. However, the pill is $50 a month even with insurance (which I no longer have) and planned parenthood wont give me birth control because I accidentally was honest and told them I had migraines. Apparently this ruled me out as I could "have a stroke" even though the same PPH clinic gave me birth control for years when I was younger, before I updated my paperwork with migraine info. If anyone has migraine headaches, DON'T TELL PLANNED PARENTHOOD. I take maxalt for the migraines. They are only once in a blue moon. It has been eye opening reading this, someone posted that they have swollen limbs and get outta bed like a 90 year old woman. I have the same thing!! I had no idea it was related to the methadone. I am on 85 mg a day. On the plus side, my skin gas cleared up a lot, which is nice. But I have gained weight and like many others here, crave sweets worse than ever. I can, and have, polished off a box of zingers or twinkies in one day, it astounded my boyfriend. I stopped buying them. I also like bbq pizza now!! How funny, I thought I was a freak. I figured it was because I am 32 now and my metabolism isn't as good as it was in my 20's. But I can't lose weight despite a diet and exercise change. So I talked to the clinic manager and the doctor, who both told me the missed period is related but the rest is not. I was really confused until I read this and found others with the same issues!! I get outta bed like I am 90 and my ankles and feet and legs HURT upon waking, my hands and arms get swollen no matter how I sleep,I crave sweets, I cant lose weight, and my period is gone. I am thrilled to see I am not alone. However, I was addicted to vicodan and pretty much any opiates I could get my hands on for 6 years, so I know this is a necessary thing for me. I am thankful for the methadone every day, and it has helped me tremendously. I am envious of you ladies who have been going through treatment with your husband...I have been with my man for 5 years, and he doesn't know about the methadone. I have kept it hidden, as his dad is a doctor who is against methadone treatment (he thinks everyone should just go cold turkey so as not to cost the state money) and if he found out, he would tell him to leave me if I don't get off methadone. He never even knew I was an addict, so methadone would be quite the shock. Thanks everyone for not making me feel alone!!

This is a very old post, but did you ever feel better? I have the EXACT same symptoms....pain in legs and knees, waking up stiff as a board, getting sweaty at work constantly for no reason. God forbid I go outside in the heat, I really sweat then, excessively, and feel miserable. What helped you? Anything in particular?
