Methadone Stopped My Periods (Page 4)

Can any of the women out there tell me if taking methadone stopped thier periods? I have been on methadone for 4 years now and as soon as I went over 35mg it completely stopped and It has not come back since. I am on 60mg now. I did get lowered to 30 mg at one time years ago and it started right up again. Does anyone know if this might be dangerous? I have asked my doctor at the meth clinic and she stated its nothing to be concerned about because I wanted to know if I should be taking something to make it start and she said no, but for some reason it seems that it just does not sound good for a natural process to stop like that and not have it do any harm. Any feedback would be appreciated.
I started going to a methadone treatment center every day sence january 2015 im on 75 mg of methadone.i am 25 and just 2 months ago my period stopped sometimes spotting here and there.is this normal please help.
Did you ever find out the answer to this question u posted, as as soon as I went up to 50ml per day mine stopped and haven't came back!? Pls reply x
ckpkmk2000, yes, that is true that it isn't dangerous to not have a period; however, what isn't good is the cause (which isn't methadone itself, it is the hormonal imbalance and endocrinopathy it can create). Here is an article that I wish I had found sooner, it explains a lot of this! jaoa.osteopathic.org/content/109/1/20.full
I definitely have low functionality thyroid and I'm on medication..my test have been much better but I still have no menstrual cycle. Ty for the feed back
You are dishing out bad information! your opinion does not make it fact. IN FACT it is NOT dangerous not to have a period I asked several Drs and nurses this question and was told as long as the reason for its absence is known, and being on methadone is the reason, your hormones or decreased amounts of them are not calling for the menstrual cycle to begin which means there isn't anything building up it just stops until the hormone level gets within a certain range again. So get your info right before spewing your misinfomation to people who need facts !

The symptoms you describe sound more like symptoms of low thyroid functioning. A decade before I started methadone I had the same symptoms you're describing and was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I'd get your thyroid functioning checked out (it's a simple blood draw) BEFORE I stopped or tapered off methadone over this, especially as low thyroid functioning CAN kill you if it goes untreated. It's a very serious thing and as it's easy and inexpensive both to check for and to treat, please get tested!! If it is your thyroid, you'll feel like a new person when you start treatment. I did and I've known several other people who have similar experiences.
I have a friend who has irregular periods, has been on methadone for about 4 yrs, her partner as well. They conceived their now 2yr old daughter on methadone, & wth her irregularity. However she had always been somewhat irregular since puberty. I however, have always been regular, & this is my second time on methadone, & I was addicted to pills over 5yrs ago. I was on suboxone for 4 1/2yrs, & just went back to methadone. Now it's been 22 days. I started my period 2days be4 going back on methadone, it stopped the day be4. I bled lightly the day I started, & normally have a 26 day cycle, but haven't had anything since then. I'm concerned cause I've never missed a period, except when I was pregnant, but the clinic diagnosed me yesterday & it was negative.
I would say most likely not, as the layer of endoemetrium tissue (or whatever its called) is completely separate from deep vein thrombosis, or other clotting disorders. They can't travel up into your body from the uterus. If methadone did cause blood clots, it would be separate from the missed periods. It would mean methadone caused both, but unrelated to each other. I am going on a whole year now without a period...it's great! But I know its not normal, so I'm going to look into getting back on the pill.
I been on meth for almost a year now and miss my period for six months but came on in November and still on with blood clots only when I move around a lot and stress to. I'm about to get off b/c my body comes first. I'm just want to know can there be clots elsewhere in my body BC I don't want them too travel.
Irregular periods are a concern but what you're describing does NOT sound good. Please get checked by a gyno. And if you aren't satisfied with the first one, see another. Sometimes us women. And especially former substance a users really have to fight for our health. God Bless
Wow great I'm not alone I was getting so worried I have been on for 2 month and only had light spotting no real menstral cycle .. But I was thinking it would be normal
I'm now getting fluid in my ankles, I lost my teeth, and having a low functioning thyroid, I'm depressed tired and no ambition from methadone.. I am shocked at how many post since our back in the winter. I'm going off the stuff gradual.
Hello. I am 30 years old and have been on methadone for a year now. dose is 110, and I havent gotten my period in a year ever since I started the program. Also I havent had any interest in being sexual. havent had intercourse in over a year, no passion or desire to be with anyone. But I do want to be able to at some point in time have a nother one. is there any meds I can take to help me get a period. It just doesnt feel right not having a period..
This is a very old post, but did you ever feel better? I have the EXACT same symptoms....pain in legs and knees, waking up stiff as a board, getting sweaty at work constantly for no reason. God forbid I go outside in the heat, I really sweat then, excessively, and feel miserable. What helped you? Anything in particular?
Same story here!! I have been on MMT for 10 months, and haven't had my period since it began. I did try birth control (just the pill), and my period came back. However, the gyno informed me that it isn't a real period on the pill, it's called "breakthrough bleeding" but it is still enough for me. However, the pill is $50 a month even with insurance (which I no longer have) and planned parenthood wont give me birth control because I accidentally was honest and told them I had migraines. Apparently this ruled me out as I could "have a stroke" even though the same PPH clinic gave me birth control for years when I was younger, before I updated my paperwork with migraine info. If anyone has migraine headaches, DON'T TELL PLANNED PARENTHOOD. I take maxalt for the migraines. They are only once in a blue moon. It has been eye opening reading this, someone posted that they have swollen limbs and get outta bed like a 90 year old woman. I have the same thing!! I had no idea it was related to the methadone. I am on 85 mg a day. On the plus side, my skin gas cleared up a lot, which is nice. But I have gained weight and like many others here, crave sweets worse than ever. I can, and have, polished off a box of zingers or twinkies in one day, it astounded my boyfriend. I stopped buying them. I also like bbq pizza now!! How funny, I thought I was a freak. I figured it was because I am 32 now and my metabolism isn't as good as it was in my 20's. But I can't lose weight despite a diet and exercise change. So I talked to the clinic manager and the doctor, who both told me the missed period is related but the rest is not. I was really confused until I read this and found others with the same issues!! I get outta bed like I am 90 and my ankles and feet and legs HURT upon waking, my hands and arms get swollen no matter how I sleep,I crave sweets, I cant lose weight, and my period is gone. I am thrilled to see I am not alone. However, I was addicted to vicodan and pretty much any opiates I could get my hands on for 6 years, so I know this is a necessary thing for me. I am thankful for the methadone every day, and it has helped me tremendously. I am envious of you ladies who have been going through treatment with your husband...I have been with my man for 5 years, and he doesn't know about the methadone. I have kept it hidden, as his dad is a doctor who is against methadone treatment (he thinks everyone should just go cold turkey so as not to cost the state money) and if he found out, he would tell him to leave me if I don't get off methadone. He never even knew I was an addict, so methadone would be quite the shock. Thanks everyone for not making me feel alone!!
It's definitely the methadone. I've noticed the cycles of clock setting-regularity when not on opiates or low doses of methadone - to stopping all together when I'm on anything over 50mls (1/1 solution - UK). Each time I have reduced, it takes a while, but somewhere between 10 - 0 mls, I end up bleeding really heavily. As if all the months/years missed were coming at once. Without wanting to be too graphic, I'd be losing large lumps (of lining?) - nothing at all like my previous cycles which were regular and of normal /medium flow.
It's as if my body saves it all up, then when the depressant effects of the opiates are reduced, my body gets itself together and musters enough energy to expel all the build up **
** Disclaimer: this is my very NON-medical interpretation. It's how it appears to me, and not necessarily medically/biologically accurate.
I consider it bad karma :-| lets face it - it really is the last thing you need when detoxing and going through withdrawals ;-)
I was taking oxys, percs, hydromorph contin, dilaudids for 2 years, then switched over to methadone 7 months ago and I havent had a period since I started the methadone. Before that my periods have been very regular my whole life. My Dr said there was nothing related to birth control in the methadone and offered no explanation as to why this happens but another girl i know had major changes in her periods too, like light to no periods. Its definitely from methadone but im not worried about it. im 35 and have 3 kids and tried oxys with my third which was an emerg c section and then hot hooked. but im at 170mg now and will start going down very slowly soon.
My partner and i are ready for children as well and im on 110 mgs methadone i haven't had my period in 5 mos.i am very concerned. Did your period finally return?
I posted a couple weeks ago about stopping my periods while on MMT well i found out i AM preggers, even tho my first test was neg, so it is possible to get pregnant while taking methadone for the girls tht were wondering if you could
Please get your facts straight before posting such ludacris information about Methadone! People like you, mislead the general public about this lifesaving drug!! Actually, you don't need to be on this forum 'MMT and the menstrual cycle' if you have these feeling about the drug. Good bye! :-)
