Methadone And Surgery (Page 3) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI'm having surgery for knee replacement and this is the first time I've had surgery and general anaesthetic while on methadone. Can anyone advise me about the safety of this and how they will treat post-operative pain?
Hi has anyone had surgery it's about 45 mins ! Because they treat you different!!! Just want to make sure it's OK !! AN didn't tell .....them you were on methadone? His there any bad risk having surgery on anaesthetic an not saying anything about Methadone? Beside pain after surgery .Thanks
I have a question I have surgery in 10 hours and I took a 5mg methadone will I be fine going under?
thanx! I loved reading that cause I'm scared as hell that I have to have surgery. I'm thiink the med they use to wake me up will send me into withdrawl.
I have a torn rotator cuff and I am in severe pain! The orthopedist told me he can not do surgery on someone on methadone. In order for me to get my shoulder repaired I need to be off of the methadone. I have been on the methadone for a chronic pain condition for the past five years and I am having a very hard time coming off of it, in the meantime my shoulder seems to be getting worse. I was also told that if I were to get surgery while on methadone, I wouldn't be able to recieve any medications to treat the pain post-op. I would appreciate any advice anyone could offer me! Is this true? From what I've been reading this just isn't true. Thank you so much everyone!!!
The pain tolerance of those on opiates for long periods of time is much different than the pain tolerance of those not on these meds. The condition is called hyperesthesia, Im on meth. maintenance and have been on 118mgs for 8 years. I haven't had any surgeries but I've had several tattoos covered up and the pain was unbearable! I was so embarrassed bc I've never had issue with pain tolerance until I was on maintenance for an extended period of time. But a longtime nurse at the clinic explained hyperesthesia to me and it explained everything. I'm thinking of getting an elective surgery here soon. BUT I'm terrified of anesthesia, partly bc I'm on methadone maintenance but also bc I have a prolonged QT interval on my last two EKG's. It's not severe and its a direct result of methadone, not something I had before. So I'm wondering how dangerous is it to get anastheia while on methadone AND with a prolonged QT interval? Anyone have any experience with this by chance? Thank you in advance:)
Whay kind of medicine was used for sedation
I'm having breast implants done and on methadone. I haven't told my surgeon either and I'm not going to. I'm only down 4 an hour so hoping I am guna be OK. Has anybody been though this at all?
Hi,
I read your post and it gave me my list confidence back. I have a gallbladder removal surgery here in London, UK in about a month and I'm on 45 ml methadone a day. I feel like if I tell my doctor I'll be treated with less care as I would be had I been methadone free. What advice can you give me? {edited for privacy}. Any information even small or insignificant will help me greatly. Thanks a lot.
Hello everyone! I'm having oral surgery this morning which may not sound like a big deal but it is to me lol. This is my first time under anesthesia. I am having a wisdom tooth extracted that has unusually deep roots that actually touch the nerve under my jaw bone? Whatever that means. Anyway, I am on 110 MG of methadone and have been for almost three years. My doctor doesn't think stacking the methadone and Anesthesia is safe. I dont have my script today so i actually must go to my doctor and get my medication before the surgery. Most people have told me they have been on methadone while having an more in depth procedure and their doctors didnt have problem with it. My question is should i be worried? Is it safe to take my medicine beforehand? I wont be able to get it after since i cant drive for the day. Will it be better to just reschedule the surgery? P.S. anesthesiologist said it was my choice whether I wanted to do the surgery on my methadone or wait so they seemed alright with it. Thank you so much for listening!
Hi How did you go with your tooth extraction whilst on Methadone?
I'm in Melbourne Australia and I myself am having stomach surgery in a few weeks. I am on 60mls of Methadone and have spoken with my surgeon as well as my anesthetist for the surgery and they have assured me that in the year 2016 there is no issue with anyone having surgery whilst on Methadone. They said that it is extremely important to always list and advise of all medications you are taking as Death can occur should you not be truthful. They are going to adjust their medications to suit my dose of Methadone so I have all the confidence now in going forward with my surgery. My Advice to anyone going on for surgery whilst on Methadone would to be upfront and honest because the last thing you or your family need is the call advising them that due to complications resulting from withholding medical information their loved one has passed away.
I am on methadone also.....need knee surgery also and have put it off for sometime. Because methadone can stop other opiates pain relievers from working as well.....it sucks...I had a hysterectomy and the pain was unreal and opiate pain relievers didn't work.....I pray it's different with my knee surgery
Where do i find this letter ? I recently broke my femur. They transferred me from my wheelchair to the operating able without ANYTHING. I went into tachycardia & passed out. BUT before I passed out my leg literally broke apart & was dangling by tissue only. I know have 3 compression fractures in my back & cant find a Dr to help me. My life is in the balance because I cannot take much more. Please if you know of this letter please reply to me
Im from pittsburgh. I need a knee replacement. I am on 80 mg of methadone. I cant find an orthopedic surgeon who will operate while on methadone. Does anyone know any orthopedic surgeons from pittsburgh that will operate on a methadone patient?
I am on 4 milligrams of methadone I'm going for dental surgery do you think the anesthetic when they put me under will affect anything since I'm on such a low dose
I am in need of a total knee replacement. I am on methadone maintenance. I can't find a surgeon to operate on me while on methadone. They all say i have to be off the methadone clinic for them to operate. I can hardly walk anymore. Is there someone i can call to find a surgeon who will operate on me while on methadone. I need help bad.
Hello I have surgery today and I'm on methadone I got the first link to work but I couldn't get the second one to work do you know of any other way I could find this within the next couple hours? I realize it's a longshot but thank you either way for posting them!
Dr and nurses treat u like a crackhead ones they know u are on methadone.Good luck
I'm scheduled next Wed for ortho knee surgery. On 40mg methadone. So scared. Did you take methadone the day of surgery?
I had been on methadone 70mgs for 6 years when I had back surgery for a broken, collapsed vertebrae. You absolutely must inform the surgeon and anesthesiologist that you are on methadone. I was given my dose for the day prior to the surgery. I strongly suggest asking the dr to have a pain mgmt dr on board to help manage your pain. As methadone can block opiates and most Drs are reluctant to give methadone for acute pain, and the max dose of the opiate may not do the job ( bc of the blocking effect) I was given the max dose of diluadid by continuous IV and it didn't touch my pain. I hung onto the bed rail in too much pain to move for 16 hrs until my surgeon came in and told them to give me my regular methadone dose. Within an hour of taking it I was able to be helped out of bed. Of course I was still in a lot of pain but that's normal after surgery. Methadone is an excellent pain Med and I think your best bet would be to discuss your concerns with the surgeon and ask him/her to give you methadone for the pain but in a dose higher than what you normally take and give it 2-3x/day rather than just once. If your regular dose is <30-40mg and you haven't been on it too long it's possible that an opiate can overcome the blocking effect (also depends on the severity of your pain). DEFINITELY discuss your options with your surgeon and have a plan. Best of luck!!!
I'm having surgery in 3days. Knee surgery to be exact and I'm Concerned about if I should stop taking my methadone a few days BEFORE surgery so as to help deal with pain management. MY question is should I stop taking methadone and Carly a few days before my surgery? Has anybody dealt with this?
