Methadone, Oxycodone & Pain (Top voted first)
UpdatedBeen on Methadone for many years via a pain clinic. I am 66. I take 50 mg. daily. and was stable and reasonably pain free until this year. I fell and broke 5 ribs on two different occasions and a slight fractured hip and torn muscles on a third fall. These falls happened while training protection dogs. For about 8-9 months I was taking about 60 mgs. of oxycodone on top of the methadone with no effect on pain - ouch!. Now, the pain is gone from the falls but I am in withdrawal and feel very sick - I think. I started to take an additional 10 mgs. methadone but it's not helping - it's been about 10 days since last dose of oxycodone. At the same time I came down with a stomach bug or was that withdrawal? Would you know how long it will take for my body to adjust to 60mgs methadone (no oxy) and not have pain and withdrawal? My legs are killing me along with irregular yawning, eyes tearing, generally sick - worse at night. Tried to split the methadone dose but it didn't work right.

Hello, Starling! How are you? I'm sorry that you're so miserable.
Unfortunately, there's no definitive time frame that I can give you, it can vary from person to person and could take anywhere from a few weeks to a month.
The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Have you consulted your doctor for advice?
I intend to see my GP for blood work and to make sure there is nothing else going on. I believe that after taking methadone for some 40 years and then adding oxycodone (60mg. daily) for 10 months for severe pain, major tolerance ensued. Now, I feel sick all the time, tryng to reestablish some degree of stability. I never was a drug addict and I don't consider myself an addict, although very physically dependent. I have no history, desire or craving for drugs. Assuming I don't have anything else wrong with me shouldn't my body start getting used to not having oxycondone on board - it's been 10 days? After all I raised my methadone dose from 50 to 60 mg. 5 days ago. Used oycodone daily for 10 months while taking 50 mg. methadone - nothing worked for pain). The side effects from the opioids. are worse then the pain at this time. I believe I have come to the end of my road (age 66) and it's time to get this crap out of my body. With any luck my body should stabilize in a few weeks. I then plan on reducing my methadone dose by 2.5 mg. per week. I am resolved to live with my maxial facial pain and take a percocet here and there. No more physical dependencies. Too bad I can't quit like I did with cigarettes last month. Please try and understand that I can't, at this point, go to my pain doctor. All the pain doctors I have known over the years are "nuts" and know much less then myself (a gp). Afraid of doctor's reaction even though I followed his prescriptions. Please give me your thoughts and ideas if any. Please tell me what you think about my proposed reduction schedule of 2.5 mg./wk. and what damage was done by my usage of oxycodone on top of the methadone.
It will get better, its not uncommon to get addicted to multiple pain killers. When you don't have one or the other you'll go into withdrawal. Take it from me,been on methadone 20 years and have been addicted to roxys,if I didn't do them I would get sick even on my methadone.
Hey starling, I'm 32 and at 27 I got rear ended at a dead stop by a lady doing 55 mph and have 3 severely fractured vertebrae in my spine and I've been on 10 mg methadone and 30 mg oxycodone and I never done a drug in my life just like u said and what most people don't think about is while your taking the meds, not only do u get dependent on the meds but also not feeling the pain, so every little ache n pain that u usually wouldn't feel, will be magnified on top of the withdrawal symptoms, which I've seen last as long as 6 months, especially when taking them as long as u have, so the best way I'd say to do is to ween yourself down by trying to take a whole day off once a week, then if u can get used to that, maybe try 2 days on, 1 day off and keep trying to go down that way instead of trying to just go down daily cuz without atleast a day in between, it will always be cold turkey which equals hell.. hope I helped, good luck!
I'm taking oxycodone 10mg but it doesn't seem to be working anymore due to the fact that I have hepatitis C. Can I switch to methadone 10mg?
