Are they any types of markings or imprints on the capsule as well?

I probably wouldn't trust the person who gave that to you if you even feel the need to question what that white powder could be. Unfortunately every prescription drug in the U.S. is required by the FDA to have some sort of marking that distinguishes it from other pills. The possibilities can seem endless without that information. It sounds like someone just bought a pack of clear empty capsules and filled them with baking soda or some other illicit drug.

Certain websites do offer lab testing for a hefty fee to identify a pill's ingredients, but that may be your only other option if you want to play it safe.
