Metformin Hci + Glimepiride

My dad has been taking tablets that are a combination of Glimepiride + Metformin HCI. Is it possible that he shift to taking just Metformin HCI (of the same dosage)? or is it also possible that the two substances: Glimepiride and Metformin HCI be taken separately (one pill for Glimepiride and another pill for Metformin HCI)?

I take them separate 1000 mg Metformin twice a day and Glimepiride 2mg before meals.
