ARE GNC VITAMIN B-6 200, GNC VITAMIN B-12 1000 & GNF FOLIC ACID 1000 COMBINED A GOOD SUBSTITUTE FOR METANX? IS THERE A GENERIC FOR METANX AVAILABLE? ## There is a generic for Metanx now. I have been paying $42, but the generic is $18. Ask your pharamacist. ## There is NO generic for Metanx, anyone that claims to be a generic does not have the L form of folate (Metanx) that product would have both the inactive form in their product (racemic mixture). DO NOT TAKE THE RACEMIC FORM. If your doctor prescribes Metanx, please only take Metanx. ## A racemic mixture has both the L and R forms of the substance and should be OK, just make sure there is sufficient L form (half of the total weightj). I.e. Metanx has 2.8 mg of the L-methylfolate, make sure the generic has this or 5.6 mg of methyl...
32 REPLIES UpdatedI read somewhere that Metanx should not be taken for neuropathy due to pernicious anemia. Is this correct? I now take Neurontin and sometimes Norco. These meds do not get rid of the pain, they just take the "edge" off of it. Thank you. ## If you take Metanx, it may cause incorrect results on the blood work for Pernicious Anemia, which could lead someone to believe that they no longer have it. So the warning is related to that, since if your condition improves, or worsens, you may not know due to false results. Ref: Folate Information Has your doctor advised you to try Metanx? What dose are you on of the Norco, and Neurontin?
1 REPLY UpdatedI have had peripheral neuropathy for almost 20 years. I read about Matanx, and would like to know the experiences of anyone who has tried it. THANKS! ## I took Metanx (2 pills a day) for a little over a month for neuropathy in my feet. It wasn't doing any good so my doctor took me off of it. After I started taking the Metanx, my neuropathy got a lot worse and pain started in one of my feet. I don't know if Metanx caused my feet to get worse, but in some posts on a similar website, some people said they thought the this medicine caused their neuropathy to become worse, too. I hope someone will have an answer for this. ## I am using the generic METANX ( NEURPATH-B) as March ,2011. this purple tablet is working Awesome for me I just came from Sam Pharmacy where I was told they no l...
4 REPLIES UpdatedMy primary Dr. Prescribed Metanx for my nerve pain from ankle fusion surgery.I've taken it for 30 days and haven't noticed any relief.will this work and if so how long before effective? ## Hello, Marsha! How are you? Metanx is classified by the FDA as a medical food that supports nerve health. However, what that means is that it won't actually relieve pain. Its typical side effect is usually just nausea, due to the potency. Have you informed your doctor that it isn't helping? You will most likely need a medication that will actually help with nerve pain. ## What state do you live in? I have found HYBRID-X cannabis oil, in a syringe, (ruce grain dose) into a veg-capsule, is the bullet for ANY nerve damage or pain. I lalready tried Pensaid patches and Gabapentin. The patch...
2 REPLIES UpdatedIs "over the counter" Metanx as effective as the prescription version? ## Hi Lynn, Based on my research, Metanx is a combination of Folic acid (3 mg), B 6 (35 mg), and B 12 (2 mg). I don't think that it would be any less effective as long as the dosage is the same as what a doctor would prescribe. The only thing that might be different is the manufacturer- but that shouldn't have any major effect on the supplement other than the types of "inactive" ingredients used. You can learn more about this drug on the page for Metanx Details I hope this helps! ## I'm traveling to India in the near future. Can I buy Metanx capsules in India at retail price? If so, does it require a prescription or where I can buy in bulk prices over-the-counter? Thanks.
2 REPLIES UpdatedIs it FDA approved? My prescription plan stopped paying and the reason was it was not FDA approved at that time. Since I stopped taking Metanx my circulation is not that good and I want to restart. ## Spoke to FDA approval is not required as Metanx falls under a food supplement. It is not a drug it's a combination of vitamins and folic acid. It is monitored but it does require a prescription. ## That is correct, Metanx is considered a medical food, not a drug, so it is registered with the FDA, but not approved by them. It is basically a nutritional supplement that is formulated to help meet the nutritional needs of people with diabetic nerve damage. Given the expense, if they are no longer covering it for you, it might be best to ask your doctor about trying other alternatives, if t...
2 REPLIES UpdatedI want to know what is in this medicine, the amount of each ingredient - how much more than an over the counter drug. ## Please explain what is in this medicine and also is vitamin C and B12 over the counter just as good. Thank you ## I just started this metanx a little over a week now. I was given a pamphlet on it. It states that metanx contains the active ingredients of folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 which allow the body to absorb them without having to break them down first like you would have to do with OTC vitamins. It is only available with a prescription and you take two of the pills a day. Hope this information helps. ## The ingredients list provided by Krystal is correct, it is generally given to help Diabetic Neuropathy patients. The breakdown is 2.8mgs of Folic Acid,...
37 REPLIES Updatedcan I use mentanx to treat my non-diabetic neuropathy? ## Metanx is just a proprietary formulation of several B vitamins, so there is really nothing that says it can only be used by people who are diabetic. Has your doctor recommended you take it? ## I have not talked it over with the Dr. but will before starting any new meds. Thanks ## I am 81 years old. Non-diabetic. My sciatic nerve pinches and that causes pain in my hips and downward. It also increases if I'm standing or walking. I want to know which medication is best suited for me (becosules or cobadex or neurobion)? Also, please advise a daily dose and duration of treatment.
3 REPLIES UpdatedMy doctor gave me a sample pack and a prescription for metanx because he thought it could help me nerve pain. But he said there were no side effects. Do you think this will be helpful? ## Hello, Mary! How are you? The FDA classifies Metanx as a medical food, it contains nutrients that are believed to help support nerve health and minimize nerve pain. Thus, there are no commonly known side effects for it, other than possibly nausea, since it is rather potent. Have you tried it, yet? ## I can check. Thanks so much. There has to be something. ## I have not.. Thanks so much. Tried a lot of meds. Trying to get away from opoids. ## METANX definitely works for sciatica! We get samples of it where I work and nothing helps when I get sciatica. I tried the Metanx and 2 hours later, the burning, p...
8 REPLIES UpdatedI've been taking Metanx for 6 months due to diabetic nephropathy and foot drop in my left foot. After the first few months I thought there was minimal improvement in frequency and severity of the pain. But now, after 6 months, it seems like the pain is as frequent and severe as when I started. I just picked up a refill and found that the price (not covered by my insurance) has almost doubled in the past 6 months. So, for $75 a month and little or no improvement, I'm done with Metanx. Incidentally, if you research this product carefully you will find that even though it is only available by prescription, it is classified as a medical food and not reviewed or approved by the FDA for efficacy or safety. ## Hi Lewie, Metanx does have published studies that show it repairs damaged ne...
11 REPLIES UpdatedI refilled my Rx for Metanx and it was a different color. I asked and the druggist said this was a generic for Metanx. I refused the Rx and went to another drugstore with my Rx. Am I wrong? Is there a generic for Metanx? ## Hello. My name is Kellie and I work on the Metanx Brand Team. Please note that there are no authorized generics for Metanx. To learn more, go to www.metanx.com and on the home page, click on "Important information about your Metanx prescription." You can also go to www.readitfirst.info for additional information. 53 REPLIES UpdatedI can nort afford $71.00 month for this RX. Any help with cost or substitutes??? ## There is no generic substitute available for Metanx. However, if you check out the website at Metanx.com, they do have a helpful resources link and list a mail order pharmacy that offers cheaper prices, so you may want to look into it. Learn more Metanx details here. How long have you been taking it? ## Have you used BrandDirectHealth.com which is owned by the manufacturer? It's less than $60/month.
2 REPLIES UpdatedCAN I BUT MENTANX TABLET PM OVER THE COUNTER ## Is your drug Metanx a prescription filled dosage? If it does require a prescription, then it is most likely not available over the counter, and I believe you would have to contact your physician to refill. You can get more information regarding Metanx by clicking on the link below... If you have any questions or concerns please post back so I can further help you find what your looking for. ## Many people experience problems with the methylation cycle in the body. This is too complicated to explain here but please study this as much as you can. I do not have diabetic neuropathy but do have macrocytosis (enlarged red blood cells). This is usually caused by low B12 and folate. The methyl forms of B12 and folate must be used for proper absorp...
2 REPLIES Updateddo they have the same ingredients. What would u suggest for generic for Metanx. It helped the tingling in my feet at night when I went to bed, I was getting a full nights sleep but the Metanx will hot be covered under United Health care anymore. Got then renewed 2x at $40 for a 3 mo supply. Then told me they weren't covered anymore for it was a dietary supplement. My neuropathy is from diabetes2 and the depletion of B compound do to Janument. Please help
UpdatedDoes Metanx have to be taken for life or until symptoms subsides and maybe go on a maintenance dose? ## Hello, Maria! How are you? It is actually a nutritional food supplement, not a medication, so there shouldn't be any problem with long-term use, but how long it is right for you is entirely up to your doctor. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea and constipation. Are there any other questions or concerns?
1 REPLY UpdatedThere are a lot of so called Generics that have names that sound like the real deal but they are not. Pam Labs is the owner of Metanx. Read what this has to say to find the real truth: globenewswire.com/news-release/Pamlab-LLC-and-Breckenridge-Pharmaceutical-Joint-Venture-to-Provide-Authorized-Generics-on-Pamlab-Branded-Medical-Food-Products.html What are your thoughts or opinions on the matter? ## @WDG, Despite what some people may say, I believe that generics will always be different than brand name medications. I mean, why else would they be so much cheaper unless there was something different about it? In the link you shared, they mentioned that "Breckenridge's authorized generics will be manufactured with the same exact ingredients & quantities as Pamlab's brand pro...
4 REPLIES UpdatedI have taken metanx for 2 1/2 mo my feet and ancles have gotten so sore i could hardly walk on them. I quit taking the med. 3 days ago and can feel a great differance in the pain leavel. ## After doing some major research Shaklee B Complex is equivalent to Metanx! Hope this comes through - they blocked my comment from yesterday! ## There have been a few people reporting that Metanx caused them worse pain and did not help at all. Unfortunately, it appears that it does cause this opposite effect in some people. Have you spoken to your doctor about using something else? Mommacakes, did you have a link to a site that sells the item in your post? If so, then yes, our site software does, sometimes, block those to prevent spamming. ## First, let me say that I meant to say Complex B from Shakle...
24 REPLIES Updatedtaken instead of foloc acid ## I went to my doctor complaining of pain in my left leg and hip. I was diagnoised with a compressed nerve in my spine. I'm am scheduled for an MRI in 4 days. In the meantime I've been perscribed METANX TABLET PAM for Neuropathy, and GABAPENTIN 300 MG CAPSULE APO for leg pain. My insurance company will not pay for the METANX. MY question is Is METANX just a bunch of vitimins and not considered a drug by the insurance companies? Also what is the chance of this product doing anymore for me than over the counter vitamins that I could probably better afford? ## It is best to speak with your doctor about it, there may be a specific reason they want you to take these ones. Prescription vitamins are often higher in nutrients than OTC ones. ## Thanks for rep...
6 REPLIES UpdatedI take Metanx as a supplement with Methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis. Is Metanx necessary when taking Methotrexate? ## Hello, Traci! How are you? No, it's not really necessary. It is actually classified by the FDA as a medical food, basically it's a supplement that contains nutrients that are believed to support nerve health and function. It's only typical side effect is nausea, due to the potency. Are you having a problem with it? ## Hello Verwon. Thank you for responding to my question. I am not having any problems with taking it. It is just very expensive! My prescription insurance doesn't cover it...30-day supply--$78.
2 REPLIES UpdatedI've just been prescribed metanx for diabetic neuropathy and want to be sure there are not any interactions with lyrica or antibiotics. ## @dizzimom, According to umm.edu's drug interaction checker, there are no interactions listed between Metanx and Lyrica. However in order to determine if an antibiotic is ok, you'd need to know the specific name, because not all antibiotics are created equal. At least not in my experience, having tried several different types. I will say though, that a common antibiotic such as Amoxicllin didn't list any particular drug interactions with Metanx when I ran a search. Hope this helps! ## is amoxicilin can interact with diane 35?tanx
