Meperidine 381 B And Meperidone 4171-v

I have been taking Meperidine 50 mg 381-b for years. Recently my pharmist switched to Meperidine 50 mg 4171-v and I do ot think it is as effective . He says it is exactly the same. Also, lately I found one of the "old" pills (381-b) and it was far more effective then the new ones. Please tell me the difference.

They are both generics for Demerol and listed as the same dosage, however, there can be differences in generic drugs and that may be what is causing your problem.

They are allowed to differ, in the amount of the active ingredient, by as much as plus or minus 20%, from the name brand. This is considered an acceptable therapeutic window. Since one generic isn't required to measure against another generic, this means that there may be dosage fluctuations from one to another.

For most people, these differences have no effect, however, for someone who is very sensitive to medications, or has been taking the same dose for a long time, as in your case, any change can cause problems.
