Melatonin And Gabapentin

Can someone tell me what the relationship between Gabapentin and Melatonin is? I’m slowly tapering up to taking 300 mg of Gabapentin 3 xs a day and am weaning off Ibuprofen this week. My Pain Management Specialist wants me to lower my pain level to make life more dueable as well as minimizing any variables at the same time. Currently I’m taking 5 mg of Melatonin and have been taking this for 5 years in order to sleep more than 3 hrs at a time (been on Gabapentin for 3.5 months and had no differences with sleep schedule afterwards). Do I need to wean off Melatonin while slowly increasing Gabapentin? I know that the pain will decrease.

1st of all how are you doing? How has your journey been ? And did you by any chance mean b12 instead of b13?
Re: Jenny (# 11)
Don’t apologize. Shingles are pretty bad and am surprised you backed off that quickly. Remember that there is light at the end of the really long tunnel.
Re: Grayman (# 10)
You did suffer more...sorry.
l had it for 2 weeks x 3....at the same time B complex.....l also eat lots of fruits and vege for vitamin C. Prefer natural food than swallow
pills if l can avoid. 3rd week x 2..
see how it goes...gradual reduce.
Vitamin b can be continued 1 per day
Re: Jenny (# 8)
I find it interesting that you mentioned Vitamin B Complex. I will do that more often. As for the nerve pain I had cut all my tendions and nerves last September and it’s too early to back off the Gabapentin. How long were you on Gaba before tapering off of it?
Re: Verwon (# 1)
I've been on melatonin for long years. My Dr. put me on pregabalin twice a day for my spinal cord pain, taking together will do no harm, as I gained some kilos since I started pregabalin. Anyhow, taking these medications (gabaline, lyrica, arcoxia and pregabalin) will cause weight gain.
l had shingles but later developed post therpetic neuralgia....nerve pain which wracked my sleep pattern.
He prescribed 3x gabapertin per day and as pain is reduced reduce to 2x, then 1x and finally as and when necessary.
the cure comes from taking 1 vitamin b complex b1 100mg, b6 200mg and b13 200mg.
must take at least 2 months to address nerve problem
l have been doing this for 2 weeks and pain is less and so reduce gabapentin to once a day after dinner
Re: Grayman (# 5)
Hi Grayman...my comment is what I found online and from experts in health at health-food stores. It can do this in some people who take it for long periods of time. I am not saying it doesn't help people. It is a hormone and is labeled a supplement which is why it can be sold over the counter in the Vitamin/supplement area.
I took Gabapentin for years along with melatonin which is a hormone that we produce less of as we age. There’s no contraindication between the two. Melatonin is an overall very good thing to take according to my oncologist. Unfortunately I’m sensitive to everything and get a headache from it if I take more than 2mg.
Re: Dar (# 4)
You’re wrong about not being able to sleep or waking up too early. At this dose I have averaged 7-9 hrs of sleep before my injury (at this point again now) whereas before melatonin I was averaging between (a good day) 3 hrs of sleep to not sleeping for 3-4 days.
Actually, melatonin is a hormone. You might want to check it out. Long use of this can cause a person to NOT be able to sleep or wake up too early. It is safe..just need to check it out.
I’m doing much better. Had a week of side effects from Ibuprofen, all day headaches and a few shivers from the spine, (before that I was taking it every day since September and 1600 mg a day since December. Had no problems but something
Re: Verwon (# 1)
Nope. Just the ones mentioned above. The website wouldn’t let me use the sentence before this as “it’s not enough details.”
Melatonin is a supplement that is used to restore a normal sleep cycle, so there are no known warnings about taking it with a prescription medication, such as Gabapentin. (But if someone is taking a medication to help with sleeping, they should consult their doctor, before taking Melatonin.)
The FDA lists the typical side effects of Gabapentin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, mood changes, and weight changes.
How are you doing, so far? Are you on any other medications?
