Megestrol is used to treat advanced carcinoma of the breast and endometrium, in some cases, also to increase appetite.
Side effects may include: changes in appetite, thirst or weight, diarrhea and high blood sugar.

As to easing the side effects, this site is not medical professionals, so cannot possibly suggest anything. There are many products available, by prescription and over the counter that can help, but your medical condition as well as any other medications you are on have to be taken under consideration.
The side effects should lessen as your body adjusts to the medication, but if they are troublesome, then you should speak to your doctor.
