Medication Side Effects
UpdatedHello everyone. I'm trying to compile a list of people who've experienced adverse reactions and life changing side effects from medicine. I lost my mother last year due to a medication she was taking, that caused cancer. I'm now on a mission to help save other people's lives and the spread awareness about the potential dangers of the medications we take daily. If you don't mind, could you list a medicine that has impacted your life in a bad way, what medicine it was, and what problems it caused you. I will also be drafting a petition to the drug makers, the FDA and whomever else I can. Thank you everyone.

Hello, Erica! How are you?
I am so very sorry about the loss of your mother, that's just such a tragic thing to occur from a medication that is supposed to help.
And I do have an experience of my own that I can share with you. Last year I had a very bad reaction to a generic version of the antibiotic Bactrim, it turns out I was both sensitive to and allergic to the sulfa based ingredient in it Sulfamethoxazole.
Learn more Bactrim details here.
On top of the allergic reaction that involved both a rash and hives, the sensitivity caused me to develop severely swollen glands, they got so large they were painful and took almost 2 weeks to go back to normal. I also developed muscle aches, fever and etc.
And my repercussion is that I now react to random sulfa based substances. Some I'm fine with, but every now and then, I suddenly have a bad allergic reaction to one.
Does anyone else have any experiences to share?
I was just writing to Ann, who asked what Simvastatin is for. It is for controlling high cholesterol, if you are not familiar with it.
I took Simvastatin for 6 months. Here is what happened to me.
I found out the hard way of a serious side effect of Simvastatin and ALL "statins" are that these medications can raise your liver enzymes. After the 6 months of taking Simvastatin, I went for blood work that is required by my Psychiatrist every 6 months, because I take Lamictal, and it can also raise your liver enzymes. My liver enzymes level was 346, when it is supposed to be 40 or under. I never had raised liver enzymes before this. My Primary Care doctor asked if I was taking any new medication, and I said yes, that I was taking generic Senekot Stool Softener and Laxative every night, which was not authorized by any doctor. He told me that no one should ever take a laxative on a daily basis, only once in a while. He blamed the Senekot for the liver enzyme raise. I stopped taking it all together, and in 6 months had my blood work done as I do every 6 months. My liver enzymes were than 742! I was shocked. He then took me off the Simvastatin, and in 2 weeks, the level was tested, and it went down to 132. I am waiting to get my next blood test in December to see what it is now. I only took this drug for 6 months and it seems to have had a permanent effect on my liver. My liver enzymes never went back to normal. It has been 2 1/2 years now and the level is still in the 130's range. I take Colestipol now for my high cholesterol.
My Primary Care Doctor has no answer as to why the level is not getting lower. I don't know if it can cause liver problems or not, but Simvastatin is the culprit, and if anything does happen to my liver due to me taking it for only 6 months, I believe that Simvastatin and all "statins" are too dangerous for consumers to take.

I've been taking symbicort for about a year. I experienced joint pain in my knees, neck, ankles and shoulder. I didn't make a connection until I had a rash on my foot below my knee. I read the side effects sheet and it mentioned the rash. I stopped taking the drug right away. It took over a month of withdrawal and started feeling better. The thing is nobody told me it was the preservatives in the wine I was drinking that caused my asthma in the first place.
Now I watch everything I eat and it's mostly home cooked. I never needed the symbicort in the first place.
Thanks for sharing your stories. And I'm sorry for what you all have gone through as well. I've also been the victim of medications. I got the Mirena IUD in August 2008, and promptly had it removed 3 months later, due to it causing additional heart palpitations. After I got it removed in November 2008, I became sick and am still dealing with health problems as a result of it now; stomach problems. neurological problems, immune system issues, among other things.
I'm going to do everything I can to help people become more informed about what they're putting in their body, because most of the time, the doctors won't warn you.
Thanks again!
